More than a commuter school
IntroductionUC is a good school and is often overlooked by locals because it has the reputation of being a commuter school and lacking in academics. We actually have top ranked programs in architecture, design, music, and theater. UC's campus is amazing now after extensive work and it really is awesome, especially the new rec center. The student union is completely redone and has a movie theater, restaurants, and a few stores. Student government is pretty involved and they bring in great performers to campus. Last year Common and Talib Kweili, Maya Angelou, and I believe Switchfoot came just to name a few.
Campus Life and Social LifeThere's always a party you can go to at UC...although some get a little rowdy (i.e. burning couch in the middle of the street). Clifton is really a great college town. There are good restaurants like Pomidori's, Skyline, and tons of Indian restaurants. There are also independent coffee shops, an independent movie theater, bars, concert halls, an Urban Outfitters, American Apparel, etc. Downtown is just down the hill although you have to go through a really rough neighborhood to get there. The main nightlife districts are Mt. Adams and Newport on the Levee and UC runs a shuttle to both places.
AcademicsIn DAAP (Design Art Architecture Planning) the workload is intense. I have friends that say the other colleges really are fairly easy, so i guess it varies where you are. Class sizes also tend to be fairly large in gen ed classes.
Student BodyMost of the students at UC are from Ohio with the majority from the Cincinnati metro. Students are fairly diverse, as is the neighborhood around campus. There still are a fair ammount of students that commute, but there are a lot that live on campus. Sports are huge at UC especially the mens basketball team and to a lesser extent, the football team. There are intramurals to get involved in and a great theater program. Students also take advantage of the bustling business climate of Cincinnati and co-op with large corporations such as Procter and Gamble, General Electric, and Federated Department Stores.
In Closing...Don't overlook UC...great campus, great parties, great school.
