The University and "The Ghetto"

Rating: 1/5 (67 ratings)
Introduction
The University of Dayton is a smaller private Catholic affiliated University. UD is a great place for all types of people because there is a very friendly atmosphere and it isn't uncommon to see 4 or 5 people you know each time you walk to class. Each class is usually under 40 people and almost all the classes are taught by real professors. There isn't much diversity in the student population, it is predominantly white and most of the students come from schools around the Ohio area. I chose the University of Dayton because of their excellent engineering school and closer relationships with professors.

Campus Life and Social Life
Campus life here is amazing and there's always something going on. There is a group called the Student Government Association that will set up lots of activities on campus for people who wish to socialize without drugs or alcohol. UD is trying to separate itself from any affiliation with underage drinking or alcohol served on campus. Most of the students party in the student neighborhood known as the "Ghetto". "The Ghetto" consists of about 16 square blocks of houses that are university owned and landlord properties. About 90% of the students live on campus until they graduate. The "Ghetto" is notorious for having wild parties that are open to anyone wishing to show up. Unlike most schools, parties at UD are totally open to everyone and no one will ever ask you to pay to get into a party. There isn't much greek life on campus, about 10 fraternities and 12 sororities make up 15% of the student population.

Academics
The workload is very reasonable for the level of the classes. University of Dayton works on semesters with having 2 school semesters and one summer semester. Most students are enrolled in the school of business or the school of engineering. There is also a great amount of students enrolled in the school of teaching. Other majors such as Art and some of the more liberal arts degrees have limited opportunities and resources. Almost every class you have will be taught by a professor, many of whom have many years of technical background in the industry. Professors are always available to help and are generally more than helpful if you need some extra guidance.

Student Body
The student body is predominantly white middle class to upper middle class. Many students are involved in extracurricular activities on campus. Many students will go out into the Ghetto or cruise the local bars on campus. Every weekend there are lots of open parties for people to go to and make friends. Many students drink beer and weekends on campus are definitely crazy. The University of Dayton "weekend" actually begins on Thursday night and ends Sunday. Many students will go out 2 to 3 times in a weekend. The student body works hard and parties just as hard. Many students study frequently while some choose to make their social life more important.

In Closing...
The University of Dayton is a really great school. The smaller class sizes and the professor - student interaction is great. Prospective students will be impressed that the University has just built a new state of the art residence hall and has also recently invested $25 million dollars in a state of the art recreation facility. All incoming students are forced to buy a laptop computer made by Tangent. These computers are overpriced and will probably break quite frequently. You would be really surprised if the laptop is still working when you graduate. Also all first and second year students have to purchase a meal plan when they are living in the dorms.
