Chillin in the 'Ville

Rating: 5/5 (7 ratings)
Introduction
Teachers really care about students and their profession and are available out of class. Plus, NO TA's--all classes taught by the actual professor--and everything is hands-on! The average class size is only 18 students, so you get really personalized attention. UE has its very own campus in Grantham, England (Harlaxton Manor north of London), so study abroad is practically mandatory because they make it so easy: Harlaxton costs the same as UE does for a semester, and there are tons of other places to go as well. City of Evansville has about 200,000 people right on Ohio River, meaning it's a happy medium between the typical Midwest rural areas and the big city (GREAT local music scene and sports!). Campus is really compact so you don't need a car, although you may want one if you want to go to the mall, etc. Campus safety is good--just the occasional minor theft or vandalism (like stealing a university-owned Christmas tree).

Campus Life and Social Life
Greek life is huge on campus--about 25% of the student body--but you don't have to be Greek to be included, and the whole student body is very friendly and interactive. Fraternities have great themed parties on weekends, and community service is big at UE. Also, with something like 180 campus organizations, there is ALWAYS something going on; there's everything from PRIDE to Grey's Anatomy Club to Black Student Union to Student Government to the Quittage Club for Harry Potter fans. There are also weekly movie nights (complete with concessions), a big student fitness center, a huge intramurals program, campus concerts and more. Oh, and DIVISION I ATHLETICS---so sports are kind of a big deal. Off-campus, there are about a bazillion restaurants, clubs and bars, and shops to go to if you venture that way.
Academics
UE Theatre is one of top programs in nation, International Studies and Foreign Language is huge, Doctorate of Physical Therapy available and strong so the whole Health and Sciences departments are outstanding, Engineering (Toyota plant here), great School of Business, Music Management program ranked in Rolling Stone, unique majors in Music and Art Therapy, Creative Writing and Journalism, Archaelogy and Art History, Religion, Environmental Science, Health Services Administration, and additional business management programs in engineering, theatre, and more. Professors are AMAZING (NO TAs), and although the workload can sometimes seem heavy, the hands-on approach makes you feel like you're really being prepared for the real world. Only downside--no programs in Architecture, specific Hospitality, Culinary Arts, or Fashion Design/Merchandising (understandably). Liberal arts curriculum allows students to double major, double minor, and study abroad without taking additional time to graduate.

Student Body
To add to the Social/Campus Life section: GREAT sports (meaning nationally ranked within past few years) for men's and women's soccer, baseball, softball, women's basketball, cross country...and more. Loosely Methodist affiliated so mass and non-denominational services definitely available and well-attended, plus lots of other churches in immediate area. The entire campus has wireless internet, comprehensive library, laundry facilities where you can check machine availability online and be alerted on your cell when your laundry is finished, and a technoligically-advanced campus in general.

In Closing...
UE is the kind of place where a student can feel safe and included, not overwhelmed, and receive a very personalized and well-rounded liberal arts education. Students are incredibly intelligent and involved (strong Honors Program), and diversity is present on many levels, from student ethnicity to student interests. UE is a private institution, but tuition is definitely affordable considering that fact. The Financial Aid Office really tries to work with students in terms of financial assistance, and there are fantastic scholarship opportunities for which every student is considered during the applicatin process. Oh, and unless you're applying to the Doctorate of Physical Therapy program, there is no essay on the application! The University of Evansville rocks!!!
