Florida's Flagship University
IntroductionIt's the flagship university in the state of Florida.
Campus Life and Social LifeThere are a lot of events that go on during welcome week, especially for students who live in the dormitories. It really helps you get to know people in your area, in different areas. During the first week there was a S’mores and Guitar event. I met a couple friends that I still have 3 years later from that. There are all sorts of Welcome week events, it’s easy to get to know people just talk to people in your classes. People are generally pretty friendly here. I’m not into football, I’m definitely a minority here. A lot of people are into Gator sports especially football. I like basketball, I try to make it to the basketball games when I can, but I’m busy a lot of times. There are 700 student organizations at UF; there’s really something for everybody. If you’re into foosball, there’s a foosball club, there’s a Rock, Paper, Scissors club, there’s clubs related to pretty much every major on campus. There are college councils, there’s student government.

AcademicsThere’s tons of majors, whatever any student is interested in, there’s a major for them. There’s great professors, great researchers, world renowned professors here doing great research, it’s the place to be.
English degree, great professors, there’s all kinds of topics you can take. You can take British Literature, you can take American Literature, there’s cultural studies. I took a class on African American and Latino Prison literature one semester, taking a class on Trash Cinema this semester; there’s all sorts of different classes here for everybody. The professors are great, it’s a big university. So a lot of times, especially in the bigger classes, you have to make an effort to get to know the professors, but if you actually go to their office hours, if you try to talk to them before or after class, they’re very open and willing to talk to students about whatever they’re interested in. In the smaller classes once you get more into your major, in the upper division, classes tend to be smaller. Professors talk to you a lot more one on one.
Student BodySome of the freshmen dorms such as Rowlings and Broward, they’re older, they’re not run down, but I mean you can tell that they’re older, they’re not in as great condition as some of the newer dorms like Hume Hall. Key’s Complex right now, it was built about 10 years ago, it’s apt style. It’s very well maintained, it’s practically brand new. I think there is diversity, it’s something the university tries to embrace. There are international students from all over the world, there are students from different states and there are events that go on on-campus to make those students feel welcome. The campus diplomats are a group that put on events. Greeks are about 10% of the campus. They are really in the minority, but they tend to be a lot more of the people that are involved in student groups and they’re the kind of people you hear about a lot more. You don’t have to be in a fraternity or a sorority to get involved with student organizations, you don’t have to be Greek to have a good time at UF. There’s a lot one can do without being in a Greek organization.
In Closing...UF has great academics, great professors and great student organizations, there’s good people and good times.
