Athens and The Radio

Rating: 3/5 (38 ratings)
Introduction
Choice of school had to do with Hope Scholarship where the lottery pays for you to go to school – if you get B’s – which makes it really, really cheap to go to school. So that was kind of why I started- but I’m pretty glad that I wound up here even though it’s mostly economics that brought me here.

Campus Life and Social Life
Athens is such a fun and interesting and weird place to live and then you get to go to a pretty good school to while you’re here. I’m not a big fan of the whole frat boy sort of culture so I steer clear of those kids but there’s a lot of really – just really interesting, creative people. I work at the radio station and its sort of a magnet for a lot of interesting and weird people here and studying a lot of interesting things, read interesting books, listen to weird music, make weird music – I like hanging out with creative people like that. There are all sorts of different types of music there’s the Frat boy music you know all the jam bands and all that stuff but there also dudes just playing saxophones and making field recordings and just really weird stuff. There are ton of campus organizations. The schools big enough that any you know, possible sort of weird thing you might be into – there’s possible at least one other person that’s into it and that one person might already have started a club – so I mean, really if you got an interest there’s someone here for you to hang out with and to do your thing with.
Academics
Well, I'm a telecommunications major which is in the school of journalism, and it's gotten better recently. I didn’t like it much at first cause there were like big classes stuff like that, but the past couple of semesters I’ve gotten into some smaller classes where the professors are really neat. They’ve got a lot of experience doing things about in the real world I suppose and you get to play with expensive toys and cameras and computers which is a lot of fun. So it gets better – you kind of have to go through some bologna like lecture classes that I didn’t like very much at all.

Student Body
I lived on campus the first year in one of the big freshman dorms where were packed in like sardines – which is a pretty positive experience. It’s a good way to get to know people your first semester. After – as soon as I got the chance UI moved into my own apartment and I’ve been living there – with a guy I met in the dorms. People drink quite a bit – some people more than others everyone seems to drink to some extent – you definitely have certain kind of folks who are at fine watering holes every night and that’s probably not to be recommended – but in moderation sure – go out for a drink everyone does that and it’s a lot of fun to hang out downtown and have a few drinks and catch some music.

In Closing...
I’ve had an absolute blast going to the University of Georgia. I love Athens. Athens is such a quirky fun place to go and – just a lot of really interesting people, interesting professors the students are interesting a lot of interesting people live in town – so I’d definitely recommend coming to Athens it a whole lot of fun.
