It's Great to Be a Georgia Bulldog!
IntroductionIf you are social, intelligent, active (politically, athletically, etc.), and outgoing, UGA is the place for you to be. Motivated individuals do best in this type of environment. I chose UGA because of its fabulous honors program, which provides an ivy league quality education at a fraction of the cost. The HOPE scholarship, which covers basically all tuition and fees, makes UGA affordable for all in-state students. If you are looking for a sheltered environment, this is not the place for you. UGA is very large (33,000+ students), and you have to be willing to go out and create your own opportunities. if you are a true go-getter, the University of Georgia is the place for you to be. You will thrive in this energetic environment.
Campus Life and Social LifeAll freshmen are required to live on campus, which is actually an awesome experience. If you are a partier, request to live in the high rise freshmen (co-ed) dorms. Weekends are full of studying during the day, and a variety of activities downtown and at fraternity parties. Alcoholic beverages abound, and non-drinkers may feel some pressure to imbibe.
Athletics are definitely the highlight of the social scene. Sanford Stadium is packed during home games, and alumni, students, and general fans flock to the campus. In fact, you can hear the cheering from miles away.
There are student organizations for every aspect of student life. You can do anything on campus, from debate with the Demosthenian Literary Society to run the student judiciary. On-campus jobs are also plentiful; it is relatively easy to find employment that is easily accesible from the dorms.
AcademicsClasses are difficult to get, and they are often much too large with TAs who know next to nothing. Try to get into the honors program, which offers much smaller classes with truly qualified professors. In addition, take advantage of the blue card program, which lets you register for classes early if you attend certain cultural events.
Student BodyThe typical student is a member of a Greek organization, from metro Atlanta, and is considered "preppy." Upper-middle class, majoring in the Arts/Humanities/Business, they enjoy going downtown on the weekends and cheering the football team to victory during fall weekends.
In Closing...Take advantage of the chance to be a little fish in a big pond, it's an experience you'll always remember!!!
The University of Georgia is often given a party label, but that is up to the individual entirely. You can take advantage of the crazy downtown and greek scene, or not. It is really a personal decision that is generally respected.
Come visit the campus. Stroll around the beautiful historic north campus, get a bite to eat downtown at one of the fabulous restaurants. You can even sit in on a large lecture class. The student-run tours are a very good way to get familiar with the campus. I would recommend emailing professors about their classes before you decide to come here. They are generally accessible, but you have to make the effort first.
The community here is incredibly supportive of the students as well. They recognize that much of the town's existence is due to student dollars, and will go out of their way to ensure a pleasant experience.
