University of Georgia: Freshman Year

Rating: 4/5 (97 ratings)
Introduction
If you're really interested in UGA....

Keep your grades up. The university is set on elevating its standards, so it's becoming more and more difficult to get in. I'd also recommend taking as many AP classes as humanly possible so you have more time to decide on your major. UGA has SEVERAL to choose from.

As for the kind of students that probably shouldn't go...

If you aren't a good note-taker, a large university probably isn't the place for you. Many of the the entry-level classes have 300+ students in them, and asking questions can be a little intimidating. Athens also has a big party scene, so if you're easily annoyed with people coming in late from drunken adventures downtown, you may want to reconsider.

Campus Life and Social Life
Best.

There are close 35,000 people to meet here, so you're never lacking in something to do. There's always a party to go to if you're interested. At the same time, there's no real pressure to do anything that you're not interested in. There are so many different kinds of people that attend school here that it's easy to find a like-minded crowd. There are also HUNDREDS of activities and clubs around to join. Everything from politics, religion, literary, greek to lacrosse and skydiving. And if we don't have your group? Just get 10+ people together and contact the student board. They'll establish your club AND give you money to get started with.

Worst.

I'm biased, so I'm going to say "there's not one." In all honesty, if you want a social life, it's here. If you don't, then there's always the option of chilling in your dorm.
Academics
I was surprised to see how intense classes can be here. Some are easy, some are difficult, but 99% of the professors/grad students/TA's know what they're talking about. You have less work to do while you're here, but the work that you DO have to do is a little more time-consuming than high school.

Student Body
There are several different kinds of student here, but I'd say that most of them are probably from Georgia. There are a large number of out-of-staters, but they're definitely in the minority. UGA is also primarily white. Why this is, I have no idea. Largest minority cultures include African-American, Asian, Indian, and gay.

In Closing...
I wasn't originally interested in going to a major state school. I applied to and was accepted to both Wake Forest and Duke. Now that I'm in Athens, there's no place I'd rather be. I'm excited about my major (advertising), my future career, and the friends that I've made. I strongly recommend at least applying to UGA, and if you decide against it, that's ok. I might also suggest that you visit the campus and the downtown area. The Athens area in the campus locality is gorgeous, and was another selling point for the school. Good Luck!
