Oh Iowa
IntroductionMost high school students I have spoken with have had a problem with the size of the school. This probably stems from Iowa having so many small towns and the students feel like they won't be able to handle the transition. I came from a class of 22 students and was the only person from my class to go to Iowa but I still saw the same people all the time and still managed to develope a pretty tight knit group of friends. It will be harder to speak directly with your professor but there are always lots of other people (TA's or Tutors) to help you with any questions you may have.
Campus Life and Social LifeIowa City has a reputation for their bars. When I was in school (2000-2005) you could get into most of the bars at 19 years of age, however, that may have changed since then. The Greek commmunity wasn't something that I was involved with but it is fairly popular and growing. Once you plug yourself into the social pipeline, which is becoming easier everyday with things like facebook.com, you'll find that house parties are the way to go. If drinking isn't your fortay, there is always things like the Coralridge Mall (Huge), Intermural Sports, Night Games, music venues, and lots more.
AcademicsIowa has a great Business School, one of the nation's top writing programs, the biggest medical school in the state (possibly nation) and lots of great liberal arts programs. I personally was in the business school which has a great facility and lots of award winning professors.
Student BodyI would say that Iowa has one of the most diverse student bodies in the Midwest. You will find people from all over the nation and all over the world. It has a reputation for being a liberal school in which the students set up many protests during my time there with regards to the War in the Middle East. And since Iowa is usually the first state in the Presidential Campaign to be visited, it's a great place to be during an election year.
In Closing...I loved my time at Iowa and I'm sure anyone with an open mind and a good head on their shoulders would fit in perfect. When I was leaving, much of the downtown area (the Pedestrian Mall) was being redone, so I'm sure it's just beautiful downtown now. I'm jealous of anyone starting their first year there because I have no doubt it will be the best four (or eight) years of their life. Good Luck!
