The Truth About UK

Rating: 1/5 (51 ratings)
Introduction
When thinking of what college to pick, most future students look at where they can find a solid academic background and a supportive atmosphere. Well, not this student. I have always been a big partier, because play is always more important than work to me. I came to UK my freshman year because I had visited current students, and partied harder than I ever had before. UK is big, fun, and there is always something to do.The down side of UK is definitely the classes. But isn't that what college is about? Of course! The only thing about these classes is that some may reach approximately 600 people. Also, availability is very poor for classes, some are instructed by TA's, the math department has NO idea what it is doing, and unless you are a genius, an A in Chemistry is almost impossible. Being a UK student has more ups than downs, so if you're looking for a good time, consider UK, but if you aren't quite the Einstein that mom and dad hoped for, take another look around.

Campus Life and Social Life
The social life of UK is unbelievable. Greek life, celebrity speakers, concerts, constant campus activities, and much more always occurs on the weekends. And if you are looking for off-campus fun, there are also many bars to be visited right across the street from campus. Also, a little word to the wise: if you decide to live on campus, definitely live on South or Central Campus for a couple reasons. One: dorms on north campus form cults that sit and talk about how smart they are and how dumb everyone else is. Two: The gyms, courts, parking lots, fun, and cool RA's are on South Campus, and you can make many more friends around there. And there is another reason: The Commons Market. Good food.

Academics
First of all, as I mentioned previously, the Math Department is AWFUL. You may think you are doing well in the class since you are acing the homework, kicking butt on the quizzes, and walking away from every class thinking "That was easy!" WRONG. The tests will definitely get you! They make absolutely no sense whatsoever. You might almost think you were sitting in on a test that was for an entirely different class. Another department that doesn't necessarily make students smile is the chemistry department. Chemistry is by far the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. If you do not have a small knack for science, I wouldn't even consider it. The tests are over at least three or four chapters and they are only 25 questions. So you are only tested over the smallest amount and each question could do damage to your grade if you make the slightest miscalculation.
Math and Chemistry are two departments you DO NOT want to mess with.

Student Body
Well, after almost a year at UK, the typical student is a beautiful, blonde girl! There are so many girls that attend UK and really not that many boys. I believe I heard somewhere that the girl to boy ration was 4 to 1. Sorry ladies. Also, the typical student skips class, has hangovers, and spends a lot of time finding the easy way out of anything they must do for class. Also, if you are a hardcore student, you spend a lot of finals week in the William T. Young Library. Most of the student body originates from either Ohio or Eastern Kentucky. But don't get me wrong because there are a few wanderers from Western Kentucky, as well as other states.

In Closing...
UK is a fun place to be, but you have to be ready to balance your work and play. Don't get carried away if you want to see those A's and B's.
