The Real Deal

IntroductionThis school is for the person who wants to have fun, but also get good grades. There are many activities and studies to choose from. I chose this school because I fell in love with the campus. We have lots of beauliful old brick buildings and great landscaping. The winters are cold, lots of snow. If you can't stand snow, sleet, and ice, you shouldn't go here. However, each major's buildings are usually close together, so not a lot of walking is needed. I also like how UMaine Orono is near the middle of the state. The majority of the students are from Maine, so one of the first things you ask when you meet someone, is where are they from. Most of the time you know the town. In Maine, distance is measured by time, if you grew up less then an hour from Orono, you most likly drove to school from home for the first year or too, untill you learned that all the 'cool people' live in apartments in Orono and Old Town. So, if you like snow, sports, studying, and friends, UMaine Orono is the place for you :-)
Campus Life and Social LifeThis school is big on their hockey team. Black Bears' Men's Hockey games are a must if you go here. Also, we have been voted as one of the best campuses for "things to do on campus." The town we're in is pretty small so, to make up for it, there are tons of clubs, organizations, sports, and greek life to get involved in. There are special events weekly, from comedy nights, free movies, to bands. There is never a dull moment on campus. There are also many apartments in the local area where most of the upper classmen live. If you like a social life, this campus is for you. However, if you like to study, we have one of the best libraries in New England and have great majors and programs available. This college is great for any kind of student, and it has a pretty low crime rate for drugs and stuff.

AcademicsGreat engenearing program! Also good education, math, history, women's studies, science, and art departments too. The Honor's program is quite nice too. Professors are all very qualified. A few of the general education professors are not so nice, but overall the staff is wonderfull. TAs really help you out if you have questions, office hours are usefull always. Workload depends on year and major. Freshman is usually easy with gen. ed. classes, just lots of 'busy work' from your proffesors. The workload get heavyier and harder the more into your major you get.
Student BodyStudent body is mixed of all sorts of people. There are greek, 'granolas' (hippy-treehugger people), sporty people, studious people, a few older people going for a second carrear, lots of international students, and some people from other states.
In Closing...COME!!! You're sure to love it!
