IntroductionDon't assume you know the real UM Amherst until you've looked a little deeper. This is a place that fosters real scholarship, protects your freedom and independence, exposes you to new and diverse ideas, surrounds you with beauty of the Pioneer Valley, invites you to sample coursework at the other fine colleges in the Five-College Consortium, finds the greatest professors in the world to inspire you, enriches the co-curricular program with thought-provoking events and speakers, and more. This is the UC Berkeley of Massachusetts and a true gem of a college.
Campus Life and Social LifeThere is a wide range of social options here all the time. From colloquia, to poetry readings to alternative music, to political clubs and more. The party scene is good but not extreme, and there is always so much more to do at the d=school, at other colleges nearby that collaborate on events, and in the great towns of Amherst and Northampton. It's a wonderful mix of options all the time. Sports are competitive and fun to follow here. The clubs are an endless array of topics, and provide interesting, vibrant student-led leadership opportunities.

AcademicsThe English department is great. The history courses are excellent. Journalism, Political science and legal studies are very, very good. Philosophy and Psychology are strong. Anthropology is excellent. The engineering and hard sciences are very strong here. The management program is tops. Students work hard to get A's here. The coursework is challenging, and the students are hard workers, and really keep each other on their toes. The library is a superb resource. Students are creative and innovative and independent. The students here care about qwuality and advocate for excellent instruction, and seek our faculty input all the time. Faculty are available and accessible, and TA's are usually very good and work with us closely.
Student BodyGreat diversity of types of people here. There are a lot of wealthy Northeast students from upper middle class backgrounds who ski and sail for pastimes. But there are others who due to their talent provide a lot of interest and come from economically diverse backgrounds. International students are great additions here, and the best of all the Massachusetts students come here if not to a competitive private college, so the creme do la creme in many respects comes to UM Amherst.
In Closing...You can find yourself here as a scholar because of the academic freedom, stimulation and rich environment here. It is a magical place, and the setting is beautiful. This university should be ranked as highly as U Wisconsin, Berkeley,Michigan and U Texas at Austin because it truly delivers on its promises and more--an exceptional education.
