THE BEST PLACE IN THE WORLD PERIOD!
IntroductionGET INVOLVED IN SOMETHING! Join a fraternity/sorority, join a club, play one of our dozens of intramural sports, go to plays, concerts, musicals, NCAA Division 1 athletics. UMass has everything you could ever think of, so there is no excuse for complaining about nothing to do. Attend these events and you'll make a pretty strong friend base in no time. I chose this school for the affordability and the size. I love big cities, and a big campus with 20,000 students was perfect for me. I make a new friend almost everyday. It's okay even if you like small school environments as well. Live in areas like the Northeast Residence Area and you'll develop a small college feel with a strong sense of community. Face it, whether you like big schools or small schools, UMass has just what you want.
Campus Life and Social LifeThe best things about campus life are that the students love being there. Everybody is trying to meet someone new. Trust me when I say that you will not make or meet any enemies here. Parties can get a little crazy. Even though it's easy to party every night, it's even easier to avoid the parties if you are not interested or just need a break. The UMass library is open 24 hours and can be a great study place when you need a quieter Friday or Saturday. There are over 200 student clubs and groups, ranging from athletic, religious, academic, political and even artistic ones. If you have a hobby, it is well represented at UMass.
AcademicsWork hard, play hard! We don't party hard because we have nothing to do, we party hard because we have a demanding courseload and need to blow off some major steam. Don't worry, it's not Harvard, but it certainly isn't Animal House. As a biology major, I'd say that I spend more time studying than anything else, but there is always time for the parties and social events going on. If you go to UMass, you will work harder than you ever have before, but you'll still have the best time of your life.
Student BodyThe students are diverse and very friendly. Three quarters of the school is from Massachusetts but you are bound to run into someone unlike anyone you've ever met before. The students typically express a good amount of school spirit and even though the different residence areas house very different types of people, we all mix very well and have a great time together. The best part about a large school is that you will find your niche. Whatever your interests are, there are at least a hundred others with them. You will make the best friends of your entire life at UMass.
In Closing...I turned down the University of Vermont, UMass Lowell, St. Anselms, Boston University, and Wheaton College...all for UMass. People told me I was crazy, but it was definitely the best decision of my life. You will not be disappointed here, this is the school for everyone.
