Don't Worry (too much) about Hurricanes
IntroductionI’ve been through one major hurricane, that was Hurricane Andrew in 1992 or 93. There was not much damage to my house, but I know that a lot of areas of Miami were hit hard. We had several near misses last year and a lot of students ended up locked up in the dorm for a few days. We had a few near misses last year. Everyone was just kind of stuck and there was a lot of rain and wind.
Campus Life and Social LifeCoral Gables is reflective of our country club atmosphere I think. It’s very high class kind of suburban. Very different from your typical Miami streets. We’ve got kids from all over Latin America, all over the country so we do get a very diverse student body here.
AcademicsI’m a journalism and literature major. I think we have a great program. I’ve taken advantage of our journalism professor. And I’ve gotten a connection at the Miami Herald where I’ve been for the past 2 years. I’ve learned a lot. I’ve been writing features and news. This school has prepared me because it’s given me a very diverse curriculum and has made me very well rounded to be able to report about different things. My school doesn’t have a very heavy course load. I find that architecture students spend a lot of time doing their stuff. The music school is very involved, also the engineering. The small class size is a great advantage. You get a lot of attention from your professor and they’ve helped me a lot. I don’t study too much. I find that with my major it’s more of an experience thing.
Student BodyIt’s hard to get involved on campus if you are a commuter. It’s good to get involved in things like Greek life. I don’t think a lot the students are very friendly if you’re not involved in an organization. I think that student organizations are what keeps this school together, so if you’re not involved in that you kind of slip through the cracks. There’s everything from Greek life to student government and there’s a student organization for just about every interest. I think it’s a very politically involved campus and I think basically every political view is represented here, so there are a lot of political groups. If you’re involved they’ll make an effort to get to know you.
In Closing...The campus is very spirited when it comes to supporting our Canes and supporting our football and basketball team. I like to go to the games for social aspects, I’m really not that into sports. We’ll get there pretty early to tailgate and we’ll all cram into the students section and scream at the top of our lungs.
