University of Miami in a nutshell
Rating: 4.1/5 (16 ratings)
IntroductionConsidering that the first time I came to Florida was move-in day for UM, I definately took a chance flying all the way across the country from Nevada, however I could not be more in love with it. But, the biggest advice I could give a student is to definately visit, and see the school before making such a big decision. Miami is definately crazy and very cultural and extremely diverse. A lot in Miami is also based on image, and it's a lot to handle at first. Yet, there is always something to do here, the weather is great and Miami is definately a lot of fun. UM is also a very competitive and difficult school contrary to belief. We're an extremely big research school and the curriculum is rigorous. If you're willing to work hard and know how to manage your time, you will definately learn a lot and have a good time.
Campus Life and Social LifeWeekends in Miami are insane. There is ALWAYS something to do with a wide range of choices. Anything from sports to house parties to clubs, whatever you're into, you will find it here. However, the worst aspect is that depending on what you do you might spend a lot of money. A plus is that you will never be bored, and even if you choose not to leave campus, there is always something going on on campus that is university sponsored. Since the weather is great, you can alwasy go outside and catch some rays, South Beach is only about a half an hour drive without traffic so it's definately a good option. It's also very easy to make friends and meet people, so if you chose not to bring a car (freshman are allowed to have a car) it will not be a problem, you will find someone with a car, and with all the available transportation and so much to do within walking distance there will never be a problem.
AcademicsWe're a big research university, all the majors and departments are one of the best in the country so a lot is expected of you. A lot of bright students attend UM and you have to work hard to keep up and succeed. About 99% of the classes are taught by professors and TA's only teach some science labs. The student to professor ratio is 14 to 1 so all classes are fairly small and intimate, and it's easy to get to know the professors. They all also have weekly office hours so they're easily accesible. University of Miami is NOT the SUNTAN U, it's very difficult and competitive university. There is also a lot of options for classes and clubs and internships and everything.
Student BodyThe students are friendly and open. We're very diverse so you will meet all kinds of new and different people.
In Closing...University of Miami has everything to offer.
