UofM Review Lets Go Blue
IntroductionIf you're looking for a school with the great, although stereotypical, "college" atmosphere, this is the place to go. I remember 4 years ago trying to decide where to go and I am incredibly happy that I decided to come to the University of Michigan. Not only is it one of the best public schools in the country but the atmosphere in Ann Arbor is amazing. "UofM Sports" is a culture in and of itself and plays a huge part in why "It's Great to be a Michigan Wolverine!" There are also a variety of clubs to get involved in from political parties to Greek life to the Squirrel Club. Yes, there is a Squirrel Club. Not only will you get a great education and become very successful upon graduating from UofM but you will learn a great deal of lessons outside of the classroom that will be valuable throughout your life.
Disclaimer: The only type of student that should stay away from UofM is the student that is close minded and intolerant. Diversity is huge at Michigan and we are proud of all that it adds to our lives.
Campus Life and Social LifeA lot of this was discussed above, but it is important to reiterate because I believe the Social and Campus life of UofM play as much a part in educating the UofM student about life as the time students spend in the classroom.
Campus life is phenomenal! There is a great deal of comraderie amongst the students at UofM, partly because of their shared love for Ann Arbor. There is a club for anything you would want to become involved in. And if for some reason you would like to start your own organization the University welcomes that initiative and will give you funding. Greek Life is a great way to become involved on Campus--not only socially but also as a way to do community service in the area.
The Social Life at UofM is amazing, its not hard to acknowledge that it is a closet party school. Contrary to popular belief, there are plenty of attractive people! The only downside is the fact that there tends to be separation amongst "Greek" people and non-Greeks. Even within the Greek system there is a great deal of division.
UofM is famous for its sports teams. This summer, at a law firm internship, the first thing my boss (partner of the firm) told me, "Oh, Michigan has a great football team!" Of course, I already knew this. Streets in Ann Arbor on Football Saturdays are not the best place to be driving as the traffic is ridiculous. But who is driving instead of tailgating anyway?

AcademicsUofM is one of the top public schools in the country. Graduates are amongst the most successful people in the nation. That being said, some departments are better than other and I wish I would have learned this before I chose my major!
LS&A~The School of Language Science and the Arts. Students not in LS&A make fun of those who are because they feel it is easy. This is a myth. Most Engineers probably wouldn't do well in the English Department. All departments in LS&A are challenging, its just quite difficult to find a job with the degrees offered as most are stepping stones to Grad school.
LS&A Professors you need to take a class from:
Ralph Williams~ Ask anyone why, they'll tell you. He's Canadian.
John Rubadeau~ He make look homeless, but he is a Doctor.
Lillian Back~ Fabulous and insightful.
Engineering~ World Renowned. Larry Paige, founder of Google, is one fo the many graduates from UofM's engineering school. A very difficult program, it can be very frustrating for students not used to getting bad grades. But there is a curve!
The Business School~ A wonderful program that ensures its students get great internships and fantastic jobs after graduation.
Student BodyThere are no "typical" students at UofM. Of course, the majority do come from Michigan, but there are many international and out-of-state students. UofM does believe in Affirmative Action. There are a great deal of students from the East Coast--and they tend to cling together. Other than that, most people are very friendly and excited to meet you!
In Closing...Hail to the Victors Valiant
Hail to the Conquering Heroes
Hail, Hail, to Michigan
The Champions of the West!
Go Blue!
That's the fight song. Like it, love it, come to UofM.
