Ole Miss- a great school for all!
IntroductionFirst of all, I should mention that I entered Ole Miss as a junior. My first two years were spent at Mississippi State...the "rival" school. Coming from that school, I found it very easy to slip into life at Ole Miss. I found everyone to be very welcoming. Like any other large public university, there are many activities available to students. Any student, whether you're a typical sorority girl/fraternity guy, an international student, alternative type, etc., can feel at home on the Ole Miss campus.
Campus Life and Social LifeThere is a huge Greek system on campus. I was involved in the Greek system, and found many dear friends this way. However, it is important to note that there are tons of people not involved in the Greek system! It is true that many friendships are formed here but they are formed the same way in the other hundreds of activities offered to students at Ole Miss. I don't believe there is a barrier or anything...it's just an activity that some are involved in and some aren't. Ole Miss has so many quality activities and organizations; it would be a cryin' shame not to take advantage of them.
There is a place for everyone here: there is even a group that dresses in medieval costumes and duels in The Grove on Sundays! About partying...sure, people like to drink, but I don't think it's as huge here as people make it out to be. I have several friends who never drank during four years at Ole Miss. And regardless, it doesn't matter if you do or don't, just have fun and don't be stupid!

AcademicsI suppose you could get through many colleges by just barely passing, never picking up a book and not learning a thing. But come on. It's ultimately up to each student to decide how much he/she wants out of a college education. While you may not like every professor, I never had one that I didn't feel I could go to and ask for help.
Student BodyI doubt there is a "typical" student at any public university. That's what makes life interesting. There are, of course, many people here from Mississippi but I had friends from Texas, California, and New Jersey to name just a few. There is also an active international group on campus. Whatever you're into, there is a group for you, be it centered on outdoor excursions, ballroom dancing, or a gospel choir.
In Closing...College is what you make it. Ole Miss has a lot to offer every student so get involved!!! Oh and the rumors are true...there are a lot of beautiful people here. Southern hospitality is also rampant.
