UNLV... eww

Rating: 2.2/5 (15 ratings)
Introduction
I chose UNLV because it was free. I have the Millenium scholarship and my other scholarships wouldn't help out enough if I went out of state. So UNLV was pretty much my very last choice. Anyone that really wants a college experience or a community feeling in their school should NOT come here. You're pretty much on your own, people don't really talk to each other in class. Also, if you have no clue whatsoever about how to get around in college or how to pay loans etc...do NOT come here. The registrar, admissions, bursar, all the people you will have to deal with to pay the school or just to get in don't give a rats ass about the students. They don't tell you anything really, they expect you to figure it out on your own. They tell you one thing when really you should be doing something else.

Campus Life and Social Life
There is no college feel to this campus, no frat or sorority houses around campus, the dorms are awful, the sports suck and there is little to no club activity. Guys especially, you have very limited sports choices. Weekends... there's not much if you're under 21 or don't have a GOOD fake ID. If you make any friends in your classes you probably won't see them outside of school much.

Academics
Advising REALLY sucks for most colleges. UNLV does have a big variety of majors and minors, but you have to pretty much advise yourself. I know that most of the sciences (chem, bio, physics, math) have horrible advisors and so does the fine arts department. The health sciences have awesome advisors, they know their shit and recognize their students. I haven't heard much about the other colleges, but I'm assuming if you major in business or something to do with hospitality, your advisor should be good because those are the most popular majors at UNLV. There is an honors college and it's a joke, a big fat joke. So if you qualify to do it, apply and have a good laugh. The classes are easy and there's not much work. I haven't had a class yet where I got homework (I'm a junior), depending on your major you might have a lot of projects or outside work (especially fine arts, liberal arts, health sci) If a class you need is offered online, TAKE IT! 9 times out of 10 it's a million times easier than taking it on campus (ESPECIALLY for 100 and 200 level classes)

Student Body
Typical? There really isn't a typical student at UNLV. The students here literally come from all over the world. There's a good mix of the snotty brats whose mommy and daddy are paying for everything, the sorority sluts, frat boys, nose to the grindstone nerds, people who really don't care etc.

In Closing...
UNLV is a school for someone who wants an atypical college experience. Nothing goes on on the campus because the strip is right there and there's more to do off campus. Food: campus food is decent, and there's tons of other food places within 5 miles around campus (Cappriottis, In and Out, Chipotle, Hawaiian BBQ etc) The downfall of the school being right by the strip is it's in one of the highest crime areas in town. Homeless guys are regularly on campus sleeping all over or harassing students and because Vegas is the city of sin there's plenty of crazies...religious fanatics are on campus demonstrating every week. If I could afford elsewhere, I wouldn't be here.
