UNLV ROCKS
IntroductionUNLV is known as a commuter school however we are growing in numbers every year. Currently UNLV has over 29,000 students. Many people that come to UNLV think ooohhhh Las Vegas, seems like such a party school, but I'd like to inform everyone that UNLV is in the process of changing its policies to up the GPA for students to strive for academic excellence.
Also as a first year student I would reccomend living in the dorms. I never did and I really wish I did. You meet so many people and there is always something going on.
Campus Life and Social LifeMy personal opinion, if you are a first year student coming to UNLV get involved. Join a sorority or fraternity, student government offers several different opportunities to get involved; you can be a senator, a director, board members even Student Body President. There are so many different recongized oraganizations on campus such as FASA, Rebel Pride Council, Orientation Leader, Rebel Connection, Rebel Nation (the student section at all the athletic events) Student Alumni Association, and many more. There is an organization for everyone.

AcademicsI would definitely say that UNLV has some really great colleges; the Hotel College, Boyd Law School, Urban Affairs, Health Sciences, Engineering, Fine Arts, University Studies and many more. The only thing that kind of sucks are the advisors for the college. Well, maybe not so much the advisors but the length of time it takes to get in to see one. I would like to let you all know though, that the Student Body President is working really hard in getting new programs implemented to speed up the process and hiring more advisors.
Student BodyUNLV is a commuter school like I said above and we have the #1 hotel college in the world. We have many international students that come to UNLV for the hotel program. Most freshman students are from the Las Vegas area and are entised by people who come from other states.
In Closing...Recently, the President of UNLV, Carol Harter resigned. It has definitely caused some tension around campus with faculty and staff. The Board of Regents is working real hard on trying to replace her with a knowledgable, person who is fit for the position.
Runnin' Rebel Basketball is also getting back on its feet with some pretty bad seasons in the past 10 years. Currently we are 7-2 in the Mountain West Conference and hopefully we win the tournament and if we won the conference that would be amazing as well. Im a die-hard Runnin' Rebel Fan.
UNLV is located in not such a great area of Las Vegas, but the regents are pushing for a renovation of the area. Crime is not that bad and we don't really have a problem with safety on campus. UNLV works very hard to protect and ensure the safety of all of its students.
I hope this helps you all in your college decisions. I love UNLV! Good luck in your future and I hope that any college you go to that you get involved and have fun in college.
