College Basketball and Frat Parties
IntroductionWe do sort of describe Carolina as Greco-centric sometimes. You don’t really have to pay attention to it if you don’t really want to. I’m not in a sorority or anything. I know a couple of people who are – they really enjoy it. The houses are very nice, I’ve been there – the Frats throw pretty big, fun parties and I’ve gone to them so other than that I’m not really sure but I hear that they’re good for the people who are in them and they get connections for after graduation and they seem to all know what’s up – I kind of don’t.
Campus Life and Social LifeFraternities are a big thing here especially as a Freshman because you don’t – you cant exactly go to bars or anything so you go there. My friends and I usually go to a Frat house or go to a friends dorm room and hang out and – there’s this thing called the pit where everybody hangs out during the day you see everyone – they say that if you were to stand there or sit there for a day you’d see every student walk through – it is a very popular spot. They’re always advertising something there – there’s always somebody sitting there or we have the Pit preacher who comes. We have a theory about him – we think UNC pays him to come so that we students would argue with him about his opinions and so we think he’s played by the administration to come and force us to think. There’s a student Union – a lot of people hang out there a lot of people sleep there on the couches upstairs.

AcademicsThe Comm department is very popular it’s very hard to get classes especially as a Freshman – I got lucky and got the beginning course, my freshman year. A lot of people are in Comm. Psych 10, everybody takes that, like astronomy, get the science and the math out of the way and English, if you don’t place out of it. We have this comedy group here called CHIPS it’s an improv group and it was hysterical because there idea of funny was acting out an element of some sort. They had an isotope and then they had the electron and the proton – it was hysterical like were laughing at Chemistry right now, I don’t understand. I take some English classes to fulfill my major. I’ll be taking a lot of those senior year because up until my junior year when I take the MCAD, I’m taking everything required to get into med school which is super fun and I’m a Chemistry minor by default – a lot of chemistry classes general through organic chemistry – physics classes, a couple of biology classes, anatomy and physiology which was my favorite.
Student BodyWhen I came to this school – I’m from Raleigh and I did not care at ALL about college sports at all so I com here and everyone’s “COLLEGE BASKETBALL” and I just didn’t care – I was more into the football team which had a good year so I was like we should be freaking out over them but no – it was all pure basketball so I despised basketball because it just – I didn’t understand it – I was like why do we – points like every 5 seconds, I did not understand. But now I’m obsessed – I’ve been taken over to the dark side. It’s easy when you live in Hinton James to go to the games because it’s right there – the Dean Dome is a 5 minute walk down there and it’s crazy because you here the screaming – like my room looks over it sort of and you hear the screaming and you just cant help it but be apart of it – you have to be a fan of basketball her. I got so much crap for not liking it, so it’s like I had to. There are a lot of people who come from like very, VERY competitive schools, they’re extremely well read – they make me feel kind of uneducated coming from a very small public school in a rural town but I’d say that they would be in the top 10 percent – its – we have a lot of really, really talented amazing people here. People are very aware – a lot of times when you talk to people politics and current events come into common conversation so it’s not like you’re in your own isolated world. I don’t know if that’s a general thing with our generation or if that’s just here but I think it comes into play a lot.
In Closing...I am living in the epitome of freshman dorms – Hinton James. It is crazy. Its really, really – I wouldn’t say trashy, but it’s not very nice but if you know, if you can keep your stuff clean, then its good – it 40 years old – I don’t even know how old it is. It’s much older than that. I live on Substance Free which is the substance free hall, and I choose that because I didn’t want anything crazy on the weekends – like I didn’t want to come home and have to clean up something, a mess or something, so I choose substance free. Cause it’s much easier during the week to study and stuff cause people aren’t partying all the time but 2nd floor – there’s 10 floors on this, in this building and it just I’m happy I don’t have to take the elevator cause that gets annoying, I know that. I hear a lot of my friends who are in sororities and fraternities they go out like every night but I usually go out like Wendsay depending upon your schedule – you’ll go so that you can sleep in the next day, you’ll go out the night before but its usually Thursday, Friday and Saturday people go out like the weekends start on Thursday – everybody parties then.
