Something for Everyone

IntroductionSince I was an in state student, UNC was the only school I applied to. Given the low tuition and the great reputation, it was an easy choice. There are a lot of oppurtunities here since UNC is a well-funded research univeristy, but you have to take the initiative and seek them. If you're not proactive, but want to make the best of college, you're better off at a smaller school where there may be less oppurtunities but they may be more visible and accessible.
Campus Life and Social LifeWith a myriad of groups to choose from, the tough part is deciding what to be involved in or go to when it comes to social life. Whether you're seeking a social, academic, athletic, or service group, you'll find whatever it is here and it will be active. Weekends, you can go to one of several cultural or artisitc performances, hang out on Franklin Street at night, and then find a party.

AcademicsIf you are interested in research, there's an entire office that exists to fund undergraduate projects in any field. The Science departments here are fantastic, although you will have to take a couple of large Bio/Chem courses in the beginning meant to weed people out. UNC has an undergraduate program in the School of Public Health, which I'm a part of and is amazing. We also have undergraduate Dental and Pharmacy programs. The Chemistry department, especially Analytical Chem is top-notch. And UNC has great Astronomy facilities both on campus and abroad.
Student BodyEven though there are 15,000 undergrads here, it never seems like it. After a while I realized I just saw the same couple hundred people everywhere. Once you settle in to your interests and academics, you won't notice the size of the school. The students I've met through my dorm, classes, and extracurriculars are a diverse and down to earth bunch. People are friendly and UNC has a very cooperative atmosphere. Everyone I've met is also really active, from traveling, service, activism, research...people are just motivated and having a great time.
In Closing...Finally, Carolina basketball rocks. Chapel Hill goes crazy in March and it's a blast!
