1 in 4 of the NATION
IntroductionI didn't choose to go to OUHSC (University of Oklahoma Health Science Center...it's part of OU, but located in OKC and has all health science majors on one campus) when I was a high school student, because I didn't know what I wanted to major in! Once I got to OU-Norman (which is TOTALLY different than OUHSC), I took an "Intro to Health Professions" Course for 1 credit hour. Every week a lecturer would speak about their health profession. It was then that I knew I wanted to become a nurse.
If you're interested in going to the OUHSC, you have to prepare yourself for rejection. Work hard in your classes at OU-Norman, and get involved! Many students had to apply a few times to get into their college. The College of Nursing, College of Medicine, College of Dentistry, and College of Physical Therapy are particularly competitive. I didn't realize that just because you're "pre-nursing" at OU doesn't mean you get into the OUHSC College of Nursing!
Campus Life and Social LifeMost people still party in Norman, because that's where all of our non-HSC friends are! The party life in Norman is awesome, as the Greek system is really big. There is ALWAYS a party to go to. Oklahoma City (where the Health Sciences Center is) has a lot of bars, great places to eat, and it's a fun artsy-city! Sports are pretty much nonexistent at the HSC, but OU has the BEST football team. Who hasn't heard of the Sooners??

AcademicsI'm in the College of Nursing, and my professors are PHENOMENAL. They go out of their way to make sure you are grasping the material. It is important to note that the OU Health Science Center is 1 in 4 of the NATION that offers 6 professional colleges on a campus. All of them are recognized nation-wide as very prestigious. The workload is tough, but once you get IN to the college of your choice, it's at least material that you care about, so it's not as bad as your first few years getting the basic sciences out of the way!
Student BodyThe actual campus at HSC is pretty, but not as "fun" as Norman. Most students party in Norman, not Oklahoma City. The parties in Norman are constant. The HSC offers intramurals, but most students still go to the OU Football games! Go Sooners! There are so many clubs and ways to get involved on both campuses.
In Closing...If you are interested in the medical field at all- OUHSC offers 6 Colleges in the Health Sciences:
Graduate College (research, Masters, and PhD's offered)
College of Allied Health
College of Dentistry
College of Medicine
College of Nursing
College of Public Health
Most students in these colleges did their basics at OU-Norman, and definitely have a leg up. So apply to OU, and leave your options open. Worse case, you change your mind, and there are endless opportunities of different majors at OU!
