Not a Big Sports School

Rating: 5/5 (34 ratings)
Introduction
Penn had like so many opportunities to get involved right away. Like so many ways to make friends, meet people, so it just how much you take advantage of those opportunities and I felt like I made an effort to meet people and get to know the campus right away so I felt really comfortable.

Campus Life and Social Life
There’s classrooms and then like next door is a frat house. So it’s kind of like a nice co-existence. I think at Penn, first of all it’s a lot bigger than a lot of other Ivy’s…But having a bigger school just makes life so much more diverse and you get so many of so many different kinds of people that it’s a nice refreshing scene. I think the social life at Penn is definitely something that distinguishes it from other schools. It’s so fun. There’s something for everyone. Every person has a scene. And that’s again something that happens at a bigger school.

Academics
It’s such an academic school it’s funny, because you go to the library and you see more people there than you do when you go out at night. My friends and I will all go the library on Sunday morning together when we have to do work. There’s times when you need extra help from your TA and it’s always available. Maybe extra help from your professor and you can get it. Office hours are an essential part of college, which was a foreign concept to me when I got here…if you really want to go the extra mile in class than you go to office hours and it’s so convenient and you have other people from your class there so its not awkward to talk to teachers. Everybody’s extremely willing to help you.

Student Body
One thing I wish Penn had more of was kind of like an athletic spirit. I think it’d be fun if all your friends went to a football game every week or whatever. There’s definitely more of a basketball fan base here than other sports, which is nice, But we don’t have the kind of Ra Ra atmosphere.

In Closing...
Philly’s a great city. I didn’t really know it before I got here…we’re ten minutes from the heart of Philly. So you don’t feel like you’re in the city at all times. Everybody who ever visits me always wants a Philly cheesesteak. Every single place you go its like Greek food and Philly Cheesesteaks. You kind of get the Philly culture thrown in there.
