Pitt = Discounts, Freebies & A Great School
IntroductionI chose Pitt because it was as far away from home as I could convince my parents to let me go. If you aren't a fan of large classes, rowdy people (Especially after sports games), or city life, Pitt isn't for you.
Campus Life and Social LifeBeing Greek, most of my social life is mapped out for me which is great. There are usually parties in north and south Oakland (ladies are free, guys have to pay). There are also organizations of every topic you can imagine so it's easy to socialize and feel like you fit in. And who can forget sports? I wouldn't try too hard for men's basketball tickets - they are near impossible to get. But if women's bball or football is your thing, getting tickets is a snap - and the prices aren't bad either!
AcademicsI think all of the departments are pretty good. I don't recommend taking classes taught by graduate students. The workload kind of sucks - like every prof thinks his class is my only one.
Student BodyYou have every kind of person and student you can imagine here at Pitt. You have the people who are extremely focused and goal driven as well as party animals; there are those who know how to balance the time between the two as well. I've met students from different states and countries; however, I find that most of the students are from the Philadelphia area or Pittsburgh itself. Students here are into every and anything - just look at the list of clubs/organization on campus - it's a huge list!
In Closing...Overall, it's a great school and a great city to go to school in. We get on the buses for free all over Allegheny County. We get into the museums for free. We get discounts on tickets for sports games, shows, concerts. There's always something going on somewhere. Oh, and who can forget half price after 11 at some of the restaurants? So worth waiting outside in the cold those extra five minutes!
