University of Pittsburgh
IntroductionMake sure that you're ready for a city school if you're thinking about Pitt. We're right in the middle of it all, and we're a huge school, so if those conditions aren't what you want you'll probably be a bit uncomfortable with Pitt. But from someone who wasn't really excited about Pitt upon first coming here, I love it now. Pittsburgh's a great city with really awesome, eclectic neighborhoods, and it's a lot cheaper to live in than many other major cities. I came to Pitt because NYU ended up being too expensive for me, but I've come to love Pittsburgh almost as much as I love New York.
Campus Life and Social LifeAs far as parties go, Oakland is set. I have friends at other schools in Pittsburgh, and a lot of them come to Pitt on the weekends. And as such a huge school, there's so many different groups that you can get involved in, so that there's always something going on.
AcademicsPitt's not an ivy league school by any means, but it does have great academics, and its standards continue to raise every year. It's a huge science and research based school, so there are a lot of Bio and Pre-Med majors. I have a lot of friends in the engineering school too, which is a really big deal. I'm in the college of arts and science for economics and French, and it's no walk in the park, but it's doable. You just have to learn how to manage your time.
Student BodyMost students at Pitt are from Pittsburgh or somewhere in Pennsylvania. There's a huge rivalry between Steelers and Eagles fans here because Pittsburgh's such a big football town. Pitt's not an extremely diverse school for being a public school in a major city, but you'll definitely be able to find someone to relate to.
In Closing...Go Pitt!
