Lot's of people from NJ
IntroductionA lot of people from New Jersey are here, me being one of them. If you are from New Jersey, specifically the 201 area code, be prepared to endure some tormenting. If you require malls or other establishments to keep yourself entertained, this probably isn't the school for you because it takes about 20 minutes to get anywhere, including Wal Mart. I chose URI because they have an Animal Science program, which most places don't have, and because of the nearby beach. However, the beach is only an advantage early in the fall and late in the spring.
Campus Life and Social LifeThere aren't really any parties on campus. They're pretty strict about the drinking. Most students stay on campus and drink in their rooms, go to clubs in Providence, or go home for the weekends. It can get pretty boring if you don't have a car or spare money.
AcademicsIt seems that the Engineering, Nursing, and Pharmacy departmens are pretty strong. The Chemistry department is awful. The academic advisors actually reccommend that you leave campus to take your chemistry courses, which I am doing now.
Student BodyThe student body here is very diverse. You can find pretty much every type of person here. Most people here are from Rhode Island and New Jersey. There are also quite a few from New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.
In Closing...Walking to class is AWFUL. The hills are huge and painful to walk up and awful in the winter. They also don't do a very good job of clearing the snow on pathways, as I have slipped and fallen several times. Parking is horrific. There aren't enough spots for everybody, freshmen parking is very far away, and they are very strict about tickets.
