Music Capital of the World
IntroductionI think I chose the University of Texas because I wanted to get away from home, but also to go somewhere I’d never been and I did a lot of research into Austin and just the fact that it’s the live music capital of the world. That was definitely a big pull for me. It’s really cool because you have a lot of big bands that will come here like Incubus and Greenday. But you’ll also have live music pretty much at any coffee shop that you go to and a lot of my friends are aspiring musicians. So that’s always good for free music and free contacts.
Campus Life and Social LifeTexas Spirits was started in 1941 and it’s a very prominent women’s organization on this campus and it’s actually also very hard to get into. It’s so much more than a sorority because a lot of people think more than 10 girls doing anything is a sorority, but it’s like not, it’s a good place to find a good family here on campus. Just to meet other women that you share different aspirations with. And it’s a launching pad into other organizations on campus.

AcademicsThere’s actually a program called UT in DC where you can go live there for 6 months and you can do that even in your last semester here and it’s something that’s really encouraging because it tells you that you don’t necessarily need to be in the DC groove if you really want to get in there. It’s just a good launching pad to come back and step from behind.
Student BodyI’m also very involved in a Ministry called Hope 242 that’s part of a, I guess part of the movement that’s called the New and Emerging Relevant Church now in America of people that are not satisfied with the churches that our parents go to and just want to be relevant in this world and to make the Gospel relevant to 20-year olds. It’s non-denominational, but like non-denominational has become such a denomination in itself not that—I guess it’s the new movement for Christian Spirituality.
In Closing...There are a lot out of state students on this campus and so you really wouldn’t stick out, but pretty much, they’ll have you saying y’all by the second day of school here, it’s the only way to go. No, nobody really says “howdy”, stay away from “howdy.” I think it’s an extremely friendly campus. Some of the most random and fun times I’ve had were with people whose names I don’t even know. And all it takes is a smile here.
