IntroductionI chose UVa because of its stellar academic reputation. I am a native Floridian, and many people thought it was strange that I went to a school so far away. But UVa's long history and tradition intrigued me, and when I visited I fell in love with the beautiful campus. You should stay away from UVa if you're nonchalant about academics. UVa's classes are challenging, and there are very few "shallow" courses. If you're ready to dive into the deep end, UVa is for you!
Campus Life and Social LifeUVa students are known for the motto "Work hard, party hard", and I think that that's true! People may be a little uptight about academics at UVa, but when the weekends come, they go all out at parties and activities! There's the Corner (a street at UVa with a bevy of resturants and the Student Bookstore), the Downtown Mall, and cultural events every weekend. Personally, I was involved with Madison House (volunteering), Black Voices (a gospel choir), and Shakespeare on the Lawn (a drama troupe). UVa also has loads of award-winning sports events for everyone--Football, Basketball, Swimming, LaCrosse, Volleyball, etc.!
AcademicsI was a History major, and I loved the fact that many of my professors had written the books that we used in the class. I loved all of my TA's at UVa as well, because everyone is so accessible. If you need to talk, or if you have questions, they are there for you. I also took several great classes from the Drama Department, the Religious Studies Department, and the SWAG (Studies in Women and Gender) Department. I like the diversity of courses offered at UVa--throughout my time a student, I took classes on the History of Popular Music, Journal Writing, the Sociology of Popular Culture, Self Defense, Biblical Hebrew, and Women of the Bible!
Student BodyMost UVa students are from Virginia, especially the Washington, DC area (Northern Virginia). Suprisingly, though, there is tons of diversity (in location and races). I am an African-American woman, and I had friends at UVa from California, Florida, Georgia and New York. Obviously the students are all very motivated, but they are also a lot of fun.
In Closing...UVa is all about Thomas Jefferson! Jefferson's ideals shape everything that UVa holds dear, and we wouldn't have it any other way. Mr. Jefferson's University is a great place for anyone who is smart, fun, and ready to learn.
