Two Time Streaker

Rating: 5/5 (11 ratings)
Introduction
I am two time streaker, don't go out as much as I used to. It's a really fun tradition at UVA, there are kind of disputes as to whether or not it’s illegal, but it’s just a lot of fun. A lot of kids going out on Friday, Saturday nights, Sunday nights, Tuesday nights, Wednesday nights, whatever night of the week. It kind of develops into a fun thing to do later on the evening. Especially if you are a little inebriated. Just kind of streak the lawn, have a lot of fun. Yell a professors name. It’s a good tradition.

Campus Life and Social Life
Greek life is huge and I think that's the biggest thing that students get involved with, but a lot of the other organizations. I'm kind of biased towards Cavalier daily because I am involved with them. It is a big thing here. We really take pride in our student newspaper being independent and none of our writers get paid so it’s kind of like a big thing to put that much time into something you care so much about. Do a daily newspaper and not get any profit out of it. So that's one thing. There're just so many opportunities it’s hard to pinpoint one organization that's influential over others. That's one the great things about UVA, it's the depth of it all. You could get involved in so many things, you could get involved in so few things so dedicated.....There's just so many chances to get involved in so many different ways that its hard to give emphasis to any one. The food is actually not that bad. If you think it terms of college food and if you actually did a tour of other colleges I think you would find that UVA is not too shabby. They're building a new dining hall. I think it will be open next year so, that should be pretty good and I've heard great things about the food that's going to be offered there. There's also other options besides cafeteria food. You have a lot of different Chic - Fil - A, you have a lot of brand names, a lot of home cooking type foods that are sold in different locations around. So it's not that bad.

Academics
We have a lot of world renowned professors and definitely nationally renowned. Just the names, I mean I'm always fascinated with the names of some of the people that are teaching classes. I've taken a class by Julian Bond the NAACP chairman and currently taking one by Larry Sabado who is huge in the political field. Just the opportunities that you have to interact with professors that have a lot of world fame is pretty amazing. A lot of the people who are at the top of the ladder so to speak at UVA are the most accessible and they're most willing to talk to the students who want to pursue them out of class. Here at UVA the most popular school is the college of Arts and Sciences, most well populated. The architecture they try to preserve and that's one great thing about UVA is that the history is still very much intact and you can see it all around you. We have a pretty serious honor code here at UVA. It's kind of obvious how much people care about it when we have a huge argument over whether or not to keep the single sanction of the honor code. It's kind of a big controversy a lot of people think that there is unfairness in how these students are tried, the bulk of them have been international students, so we are trying to reform how these international students understand the actual honor kid. There's been some misunderstanding on how the honor code is dealt with here at UVA. I think it's definitely been a long lasting tradition here and its something we need to reform but a lot of students are still clinging to it.

Student Body

I would say we still have problems with diversity issues. It’s definitely a very heated topic, race relations. With a very southern population. I mean you were talking about the stereotypes earlier and I think they are true in some ways. We have a very southern student body. .... Its kind of culture-shock for some people who haven't been involved in very diverse populations in high school and middle school, so we're still working on improving race relations at UVA.

In Closing...
There are so many different ways to party here at UVA. Obviously you have the Greek life, the fraternities and sororities, but another big thing is the bars. A lot of upperclassmen go to the bars a lot. And then obviously apartment parties and house parties are great too for people who live off campus. UVA students find every way to drink and every way to make any sort of meeting or party into a drinking party. Lil Jon's is a great place down on the corner. It's actually one of the top reasons I came to UVA. It's a great sandwich shop that's open all night long. It's one of the few on the corner that's open all night. A lot of people love to go there late at night and get something to eat, usually after parties. But it's great food and it’s fairly cheap to so it's a great place.
