Music alley
IntroductionI’m a music minor, I came here as music major, it’s a wonderful dept. and I switched to a minor. I got very interested in other depts. and switched my major several times and wanted to keep up with my music. I’ m doing a history major now. I’ve been really impressed with the university because every dept. I’ve come to people will say “oh this is the 5th best dept. in the country, or this is the best astronomy dept.” I’ve been really impressed with everything I’ve found here. I’ve found even if I’m not in the depts. anymore I still can get work or volunteer. A lot of the depts. run field trips, hands on stuff, easy access to the professors.
I did one where I was in a marine biology class and we went to the peninsula. We spent a weekend at a Marine center there and we did type pooling and we did experiments and we walked down the beach and it was a wonderful experience.
Campus Life and Social LifeI came here because I wanted a university that wasn’t just a music institute. Where I could double major in something because I had a lot of different interests. This is a great place to go for a variety of things.
They have scholarships opportunities in the music dept. It’s really easy to get into performances. Everyone plays in an orchestra and it’s easy to get in with chamber music and be playing with quartets and trios and everyone is really nice.
Seattle is a great place to come for music. There is everything from the Hall where you can see the Seattle Symphony, the Opera House and different musical companies. It’s really easy, you can get $10 tickets to any performance in Seattle.

AcademicsI live off campus, a couple of blocks off campus and it is really convenient. I’m renting a house with some friends of mine.
Some people stay in the dorms for a couple of years and then move off-campus to houses.
It’s funny because Seattle has the terrible reputation for rain and I haven’t found it that way at all. I may have just come during a dry season. You have the rainy day, but I find it very nice.
It can be frustrating if you have plans for the weekend and you wake up and want to go hiking.
I hike locally and go hiking with friends a lot, but nothing too serious.
Student BodyI go to concerts, there’s jazz alley. It’s a great place, you eat dinner and watch live music. Seattle’s got a really good nightlife if you like doing that.
The academic achievement is pretty high. The people that come here are a little above the average.
Generally people enjoy the northwest, it has a distinct flavor to it. You see a lot of people wearing hiking boots. But then it is also mixed with the cosmopolitan melting block of all different cultures.
In Closing...I actually was never in a monster class like with 800 people. I’ve been in classes with maybe 100 people and a couple of TA’s
TA’s vary. Some of them are amazingly good and some are just terrible.
Really I’ve been very impressed with the academics here. I haven’t had anything bad to say about it.
I’d really try to go and seek out and pursue your professors. Even if you work in a lab or something, I would get involved here.
I go downtown every couple of weeks. Just hop on the bus and go to the market or walk around, go to dinner. Vancouver I’ve only gone a couple of times, it’s a little harder.
If you know where to go Seattle is great. I came from a small town so Seattle was a little overwhelming. Everything was so expensive. I really became familiar with the area. I learned where the cheap places are.
It probably took about a year to really adjust. It was a huge change.
