Sweet Home Valparaiso

Rating: 4/5 (42 ratings)
Introduction
At Valparaiso University, you don't have to worry about being lost in the crowd due to the mass amounts of people all over campus: Valpo is small enough where you can get to know a lot of people at once and see many throughout the day. If you're worried about not knowing anyone coming in, they have a great Freshman orientation that enables you to meet so many people and get chances to bond with them within only three days. I chose Valparaiso because it made me feel it can be my home away from home. I liked the small school feeling because I was able to make a name for myself on campus and like i said, not be drowned out by the crowd. I think that it is the nicest thing in the world to be walking to classes and see at least three people or friends that I know instead of one person I know once a day. Classes also are so close together and the farthest walk I have is only 15 minutes, as compared with bigger schools at hours. I think this school is for everyone!

Campus Life and Social Life
The best things about campus life and social life are that the fraternities are a fun place to hang out on the weekend, especially when they plan their dance parties. Basketball games are fun to go to also because the crowd always get into the games and we have a Pep Band to keep the beat going. Union Board is also an organization that will sponsor amazing events such as getting famous people to come to campus (bands, comedians, etc.) and also schedule events such as trips to Chicago (which is nicely only an hour away by train), the Indiana Dunes (our type of beach), Cedar Point, and so on.

The worst part about this campus is the University Police. They spend more time trying to bust underage college students and parties than protect students from other dangers such as suspicious strangers and rapists. We believe it's their goal to see how many students they can arrest each month because any party they can bust they will, and if you're underage, you go to jail for the night. Weekends also can be boring if there are no parties because there's no clubs or anything too exciting to go to except Inmans for cheap bowling and this small movie theatre down the road.

Academics
Academics here are solid... The best departments in my opinion are Meteorology and Communications. I'm in Meterology, and our new buildings and equipment that the professionals use put us one step ahead of other students competing against us for spots in the job market. We have our own Dopplar Radar and Radiosounde (Weather balloon launcher) to learn and practice retrieving data and making predictions. There is also a radio station in the Comm building which has been ranked the best in college radio and also best radio station in Indiana. Great professors who will help you out whenever you need it.

The worst department here is the Math department. I hear SO MANY comments about how bad it and the professors suck. I never hated math so much until I had to take it at Valpo.

Student Body
A typical student from our school is very unique in his or her own way. You have such a variety of people who like different things and are very cultured. A lot of the campus is Greek, which makes it fun for them because we sponsor many events to raise money as well as interact with the many people on campus. Students are from all over the country, which is cool because you'll find at least one person from your home state.

In Closing...
I love being a student here at Valparaiso University. There is so much opportunity to do what I want and to work towards my future goals and aspirations. I have made a name for myself and I continue to work hard to obtain it. There's no other school I want to say I graduated from than Valparaiso University. I know this review sounds like it's selling the school, but that's just my opinion! Read more reviews if you want other opinions.
