A Lot to Offer!

Rating: 4/5 (49 ratings)
Introduction
Vassar has a lot to offer. It's library is amazing and it's size allows the students to form close relationships with the professors. Also, students are given opportunities that simply wouldn't be possible at a larger institution. Since it's only a college, odds are teaching aids will never teach one of your classes. Students who tend to follow the crowd or who want a lot of guidance shouldn't choose Vassar. There are plenty of resources for help, but you have to seek them out yourself and in the end the decision is still yours. Students also need to open minded and come prepared to have their beliefs questioned. To take advantage of all that Vassar is and has to offer you've got to be willing to keep an open mind.

Campus Life and Social Life
Despite the lack of a greek system, there are plenty of parties to be found on Vassar's campus, especially on weekends. If you don't drink or do drugs you may have more limited options, but there should still be some things to do. The Mug, the dance club on campus, can be a fun place to hang out. During the week they have jazz night. There's also the Pub which sometimes has live music as well as food and alcohol.

Sports aren't a big deal at Vassar. People who want to play them do and most other people just don't think about them. There isn't a lot of attendance at most games.

There is a wide variety of clubs for nearly any interest. There's a school newspaper, literary magazine, feminist alliance, and a sailing club just to name a few. During freshman week they have a fair where you can learn about all the different organizations.
Academics
The workload varies but for most classes it is significant and writing intensive. The English department is good, but being an English major is rumored to be the most difficult. In all the departments there are good and bad professors. You don't really have to deal with TAs since, for the most part, there aren't any. I've found the professors to be very helpful in all the departments I've had contact with.

Student Body
As cliche as it sounds I've found that there is no typical student at Vassar. Everyone here is an individual. The majority come from the Northeast, especially New York, but there are students from everywhere. I'm from Georgia, and my roomates are from TN and IL. I've met people from as far as Guam and Columbia. Interests are just as varied as location. Some people like the outdoors and sports others are into fashion or writing. You'll get a different answer from every student you ask.

In Closing...
Vassar is a great school that provides students with a lot of freedom to find their own interests. The openess of their curriculum allows students the chance to explore different areas. Such an environment can take some getting used to, but once you've adjusted, Vassar is a lot of fun.
