Athletes/Conservatives/Former Abercrombie employees need not apply
IntroductionI chose Vassar because, let's face it, it is prestigious and has a great academic reputation. The classes and professors ARE amazing, and I'm a political science major so I rarely have a lot work. A lot of reading, 3 papers a semester is usually how it goes. Professors expect class participation, and for the most part are VERY fair graders. It's hard to get an A but harder to get below a B.
That said, the social scene, if you're a semi-mainstream, attractive, heterosexual female is HORRIFIC. There are a few good looking guys, but they're all gay or else have hugely inflated egos. For guys, the situation isn't much better. If you're gay/artsy/indie/hippie/hipster, you'll love this school. It's very open, tolerant, and tightly knit. However, if you shop at Abercrombie, love sports or voted for George Bush, DO NOT come here. You'll be miserable and wish you would have gone to Georgetown, Lehigh or Dartmouth.
Campus Life and Social LifeLots of parties...LOTS of parties....but it's the same people smoking hookah on the quad or getting drunk in the Mug (our on-campus bar). It's fun, but one gets really tired of seeing the same people all the time.
AcademicsLanguages/Social Sciences are GREAT--you'll learn a lot, work is definitely manageable and grading is pretty easy.
Student BodyHipster. The admissions office has been admitting more "mainstream" kids though, so the demographic IS starting to change...more popped collars and less legwarmers/stupid haircuts.
In Closing...All in all, it's a great school...but don't come here expecting a frat/football party scene.
