Good for an Avid City-Goer
IntroductionAttend VCU if you consider yourself an avid city-goer. VCU is nestled in the heart of Richmond, VA's fan district. VCU is an urban campus with many aspects of city life to enjoy. I chose to attend VCU because I enjoy having the city atmosphere around as well as the traditional college presence. If you want to attend a college or university nestled in its own community without the extra city life around, this is not the school for you.
Campus Life and Social LifeVCU offers an energetic and exciting social life for all students. Fraternity presence is high around campus as well as non fraternity social events. There are many parties happening on the weekends in various houses in the fan district of the city. The VCU Rams are always playing sports in their various incarnations, and the basketball team is one of the top teams in the league. Richmond also offers the presence of many socially exciting clubs.

AcademicsThe workload at VCU is pretty balanced in many different fields of study. If you are anticipating taking a writing intensive course, prepare more time for homework. The Mass Communications department is an excellent choice for any student wishing to persue a career in advertising, media relations or journalism. The engineering department is top-notch but prepare for a heavy workload and many hours studying in the library. The professors at VCU all vary greatly in their strengths and weaknesses, but many are quite accomodating to their student's individual needs. The various TA's around campus are extremely energetic students who are vary familiar with their subjects and are always quite helpful.
Student BodyThe student body at VCU is extremely diverse. Many students come from Northern Virginia as well as Richmond and its surrounding counties. Students are either wrapped up in their sorority or fraternity social lives or many choose to follow their own paths and make many networks of friends. There is no real definition of the typical student, because of the diversity seen in the faces and cultures that VCU students originate from.
In Closing...VCU is a growing university that has a very awesome future in the making. If you want to meet new people who you'd never expect to be socially aquainted with, this is the place for you. There are many interesting students with all different cultural backgrounds here. VCU should be toured by anyone with an open mind and academically oriented attitude.
