It's a Hokie Thing

Rating: 4/5 (44 ratings)
Introduction
When I walked onto the Virginia Tech campus, I knew that it was where I had to go. During my tour, a student with boxers on his head ran up to the Pylons and screamed at the top of his lungs, "BRING US YOUR DAUGHTERS!" Where others were afraid, I laughed and knew Tech was the school for me. I looked at other schools, and applied to several. When I got my official acceptance letter, I knew that the other schools meant nothing. The best decision I ever made was to go to VT.

Big schools seem overwhelming at first, but the longer you are there the smaller the campus becomes. Large lecture halls are intimidating, but after a few classes, you meet people and they are fun. You realize that big classes aren't that bad.

Students who do not like large schools should definitely stay away from VT. Even though the town is small, Tech students make up Blacksburg.

When looking at any school, just look around and you'll know. I knew the second I stepped foot on the campus. Always go with your gut instinct!

Campus Life and Social Life
Fraternity parties are for the freshmen and sophomores. Then get a fake ID and go to DT Blacksburg! Get involved with whatever you feel comfortable with. Whether it's academics, Greek, sports, etc. By joining different clubs, you ultimately get involved in other things like intramurals, philanthropies, the Big Event, etc.

Where fraternity parties are fun the first year or so, they become a little redundant. They eventually get boring and old. However, nothing beats the all day social events.

Campus life is great. I loved living on campus. The first week of classes, my hall was inseparable. It becomes a safety net until you find your niche. Even after you find your niche, you still can rely on your hall to have a good time. During the summer/spring months, people are always playing volleyball, basketball, frisbee golf, etc. The Drillfield is another aspect of Tech that sets it apart from other schools. VT was originally an all-male school with a Corps of Cadets. Well, it still has the corps in upperquad. Every year during the first snow storm, the Corps challenges the civilians to a huge snowball fight! It's great.

There is always something happening on the Tech campus. Whether it's late night ice cream at Deet's or messing around with your friends, there is always something to do. Every night of the week, there is always some party! Campus is very close to the fraternity houses; it's just a short walk.

Once you have an ID or you are of age, the DT scene in Blackburg is legendary. You have every bar for every type of person. There is TOTS, mostly for the Greeks. Then there is Hokie House, where anyone goes. Sharky's has the best happy hour. Big Al's is a blast. Rivermill has great carbombs. Champs is a great sports bar. The best part about Tech bars is that most of them have outdoor decks. It gets hot in Blacksburg; therefore, the decks are a must!

A great thing about Tech is that it has a great social scene for the lower years and the upper years. The fraternity/apartment party scence is great and never gets old. Then there is the downtown scene with every bar basically on the same street. One of the best things about Blacksburg is that everything is so CHEAP!

There are other social events that do not revolve around partying. The campus hosts various muscial artist, comedians, plays, etc. VT has a number of clubs get together and have a blast.

Academics
I liked PSCI and HIST. The COMM department is also great. However, liberal arts does not get the money, so the classes you need to take aren't available every year.

Student Body
There is not "typical" VT student. It depends on the group, what he/she is involved in, what he/she is studying, etc. However, joining a Greek organization puts together all different students from all different backgrounds and majors. A lot of VT students are from Virginia, but there are also a number from NY, NJ, MD and NC. Tech attracts many people, even those from other countries. No matter where a student is from, we all have one thing in common HOKIE PRIDE! How 'Bout them HOKIES!

In Closing...
Tech is a great school! You will receive a great education while having a blast!
