Southern Hospitality
IntroductionMy first impression was just how big the school was. And I think that’s bit of an adjustment for some people. For some students it’s really intimidating. I really wasn’t expecting a campus this big.
Campus Life and Social LifeI know they have vegetarian meals, I know that was a big deal and they won an award around here. So it’s really diverse. Obviously you have some bad food and you have some good food. I’d say it’s a good mixture of everything. We have a bus transportation system that’s really local and it runs pretty frequently so it’s not to difficult to get around. When the school starts up in the fall, there’s always something go around, there’s always business running. So I’d have to say it’s probably more of a college town. Since Blacksburg is a very rural town, a lot of people will make jokes like there’s nothing but cows here and it’s a very small town in that sense. But I think that the advantage to that is the people.

AcademicsVA Tech as far as the engineering goes is probably one of the best in the state. It’s definitely one of the tougher programs here. Many companies around here when they come here for engineering they know they’re getting some of the best students. You’re going to deal with some professors that are extremely knowledgeable and extremely outgoing. And then you’ll also deal with some, especially in the engineering, they’re so focused on their subject that they’re not as personable as they could be. It’s not a question of how good they know their subject, it a question of how good teachers can they be. You’ll get some classes, especially in engineering, especially in the first few years, where it’s just general engineering type of classes. Which can range anywhere between like 30 –100,200 students. It really depends, the more general subjects have the larger classes, but the more focused classes have much more small ones.
Student BodyThere’s a good amount of students that are very dedicated in their work. They take their work, especially like in engineering aspects. They take it very seriously. But obviously I think there are students here to have a good time. They want to get the best aspects of college and that’s just enjoy college because when they go into the real world. They’re not going to have that opportunity to have some fun. I’d say it’s a wide range of students that are very serious about academics and just want to have fun.
In Closing...Because you’re in a southern area you get a lot of that Southern Hospitality if you will. Even students that are coming from the northern states or even from California, you’re going to get a really, that southern feel. And I think that’s the best aspect. The people are probably the best part of Blacksburg.
