Wayne State: Looking for Leaders

Rating: 4/5 (48 ratings)
Introduction
Wayne State University is in the cultural center of Detroit. Although many people think negatively of the school because it is located in Detroit, the crime rate on campus is minimal and is comparable to that of any other college campus. Crime statistics are even sent out monthly by the WSU Police Department so that students are aware of the number and types of crimes that have occured. The key is to use common sense. I would not recommend that anyone travel by foot late at night by themselves.

Campus Life and Social Life
Sports are a high priority on this campus. Hockey and men's basketball have the largest following. We also have a great Greek system. Sororities and fraternities are on the rise, and we have nearly 300 active student organizations. However, this is a mostly commuter campus which means that many people (even those living on campus) go home for the weekends. Many businesses are closed on the weekend or have limited weekend hours. Campus development is on the rise and about six new restaurants are scheduled to open in the near future.

Academics
We have about 11 schools and colleges within in the university. Among the most popular and most highly acclaimed are the law school, the business school, the medical school, and the art school. WSU has a very internationally diverse staff and faculty. What this means for you...you get real world experience and see the world how it really is--very culturally diverse. It also means that some of your professors may be difficult to understand-which is a minor speed bump on the road to college success. WSU has an academic success center which offers advising and tutoring free of charge. Supplemental Instruction is also a service that is free of charge. SI is a supplemental class that is offered with certain difficult classes for those dedicated students who may be struggling but genuinely want to do well in their classes. This class is taught by a different instructor who can offer more one on one help. We also have free classes designed to help students discover what their passion is and in which career they would be most successful.

Student Body
There is no "typical" student at Wayne State University. There are so many different kinds of people here. Many come from the city and suburbs and many come from abroad. Students of all cultures and nationalities, studies, focuses, and interests come together at WSU in a big campus melting pot, so to speak. And, while there are cliques of certain cultural backgrounds, there are so many people here who are open to the idea of having many unique and different friends. This is the type of person that would get the most out of their college experience at WSU.

In Closing...
Wayne State University is constantly making new developments on campus. While it remains mostly a commuter campus, there are three brand new residence halls that have been built within the past three years. Also, there are approximately four brand new restaurants with about six new ones in the development process. Not only that, there are plans to build a new business school and a state-of-the-art student center. The campus is forever evolving. If you have hopes of becoming a campus leader and are open to new cultures and ideas, this is the university for you!
