Good Place If You Find Your Niche

Rating: 3.2/5 (24 ratings)
Introduction
As cliche as this sounds, Wesleyan can be as awesome as you want it to be. For example, I didn't realize until the end of my Freshman year that it's possible to receive funding to put on a show (any show) in the theater, just by completing an application. It's worth it to pursue the activities you're interested in here, and if you can't find what you want, you can start something up. To be honest I ended up going to Wesleyan because I felt like it was my best option among the schools I was accepted to. I had not even liked it that much when I visited, but I am now glad to be here. Though I would consider my political views to be pretty liberal, I would say that the Wesleyan trope of (excessive?) political correctness is completely accurate, and I would not recommend that anyone whose political affiliations are further right than moderate attend this school, unless s/he is ready to be the political minority.

Campus Life and Social Life
People who want to party can usually find somewhere to go. I would say that the social scene is limited to the extent that it feels like the same houses are having the same parties over and over . . . but people have fun and are enthusiastic. That's something I love about Wesleyan-- the students are generally happy, and the general tenor is a positive one. I don't know much about the sports scene, other than that those who participate find limited time for other activities. It seems that there is a lot of team bonding, and that those who play sports have fun, though the "jock" is not necessarily a revered figure on campus. There are a lot of clubs to choose from, though sometimes it's intimidating joining a new organization, particularly if the time commitment looks heavy. Also, beware of flaky clubs, in which the organizers don't have their acts together, and the projects end up half-hearted.

Academics
The academics are strong, and there is no department that is known for being too easy or too fluffy. The professors, for the most part, are helpful and open to meet outside of class, through office hours or by appointment. I have found one-on-one professor time to be some of the most valuable I've spent. Film Studies is a popular and competitive major (and highly rated nationwide). I'm very happy with the Classics department, and the History department offers good classes as well. I can't think, off the top of my head, of any department that is poorly served here. I don't think anyone finds the workload to be small. I sometimes feel bogged down by work, but that is also due to natural procrastination, which can easily set in.

Student Body
The "typical" student at Wesleyan is the classic alternative, activisty type. I wouldn't say that all fall into this category, but it's definitely the stereotype. There are a lot of students from outside of Boston and New York. Many students are involved in music or theater, and for the most part all are active in some sort of extracurricular activity.

In Closing...
I would recommend this school to anyone who likes to work hard, and who is ready to create their own social path-- college is about making time for what you love and about figuring out how to balance all the things that have to be done.
