Trendy conformity

Rating: 1.1/5 (59 ratings)
Introduction
I chose Wesleyan very coincidently because a coach recruited me for rowing. I wanted to go to Yale. Any student that wants to go to an Ivy league for even the SLIGHTEST bit of prestige (don't kid yourself) shouldn't waste his/her time at Wes. You work your tail off for almost no public reward- most people haven't even heard of Wesleyan, and if they have they usually confuse it with Wellesley (the ALL GIRLS school!).

Campus Life and Social Life
The best part of campus life is the very basic comfort you feel as soon as you move in. Almost immediately, you feel at home- and anything you do no, no matter how odd, is accepted with open arms. You will never feel "weird" at Wesleyan (partly because there is always someone "weirder"). The worst aspect of campus life is the party scene- especially as a freshman. As a freshman you have little choice but to attend frat parties (which are ususally poorly planned, and lack sufficient alcohol/good music). As you get older, you will make more friends with wood-framed houses (and you will eventually be one of these people, senior year) and these parties are a little more fun to go to because they are full of your close friends in a home-like atmosphere.

Academics
Wesleyan in an incredibly academically challenging school. Many people complain that they were 'smart until they came to Wesleyan'. There is no grade inflation at Wesleyan. The most famous departments here are film studies and the sciences, while the most notoriously pathetic are Mathematics and film production. Professors here are very good on average, but that means that there are about 10 world-renowned professors at the university and the rest are so-so. My advice is to try and get classes with at least one of the very famous professors a year- even if the course isn't for your major, you will NOT regret it. TAs aren't really a big part of academic life here because students can typically have a close relationship with the actual professor if they really need help. But TAs are a helpful alternative in the case of a very large class. The workload really depends on your classes/major- but the bottom line is there are ZERO easy classes at Wesleyan. Even the 'jocks' are really smart. There is no way you will have less than 2-3 hours of work per night.

Student Body
The student body is incredibly diverse, by all means of the word- ethnically, financially, etc. Most of the students are from the Northeast, but there is a pretty significant international population. The only stereotpe that could be made is that many of the students are "rich hippies". That is, they are dressed in what look like rags but are actually $300 'designer' rags. They pretend to have interest in world peace and community service, but they actually just say this to be trendy and then drive away covertly in their Mercedes SUVs.

In Closing...
We have absolutely AMAZING athletic facilities.
