Best kept secret of the Appalachians

Rating: 3/5 (47 ratings)
Introduction
For starters, every incoming student to West Virginia University must assume the role as a Mountaineer; which means gameday bright early kegs and eggs is mandatory. Second, as a Mountaineer you must have strong legs because this campus is all hills. Third, by applying one assumes you are more of an extrovert -- where you show your colors and spirit everyday, and by showing spirit I mean fueling yourself with cheap beer and doing what Mountaineers do best...party. Finally, some may say this school is a write-off where you can party hard and slip your way into walking across the stage at graduation...far from it, you must have a good work ethic and stay on top of your game at what some call "The Harvard of the Appalachians"

Campus Life and Social Life
With West Virginia University's reputation as one of the hardest partying schools in the country year in and year out...one must understand this is true. In my four years as a student there, I have honestly seen over 50 street fires in post game celebrations. If you're looking for a good bar scene, this is definitely the best college town...for all ages [trust me]. As far as sports go, West Virginia Univ. houses a top 5 football team and Sugar Bowl champions, as well as a top 10 basketball team. Weekends here in the fall are centered around football and high levels of beer consumption -- considering the state does not have a professional team. Also, there is a student tram that connects the whole school together. NOTE: WVU offers a student tailgate where pickup trucks full of kegs are offered and local police officers hand out cups to students entering.
Academics
WVU has a premier engineering program and one of the top Athletic training schools and the top Foresics program in the country. All departments here are competitive, but none are as close as our business school. The business school here is highly populated due to many freshman dropouts of their original major. Also we have some of the best professors in the region and in the country in our mountain town campus.

Student Body
Very easy, a typical student at WVU is a probably a white student traveling with an Ipod with Blue and Gold clad Mountaineer gear on. This school is not very diverse unless you are on the engineering campus. Most student hail from West Virginia, Pittsburgh area and western PA, northern Virginia, southern NY, New Jersey, but not so many from Ohio and Eastern PA. Students here come for the social and party scene, many for the outdoors (climbing, rafting, caving, hiking, etc.), many for the unique programs here like Forensics, and some who claim as the perfect town to get away from your parents-have the time of your life-and earn a quality degree. RANDOM WVU FACT: WVU over the years has produced 25 Rhodes Scholars (ranks 6th among public universities).

In Closing...
One thing you hear is people bashing the entire state of West Virginia as inbreds and hicks. Granted WV has its share of weirdos and differences, but this school and area is home to some of the most caring and accepting people. The people that come here are very open to others and the locals seem to embrace the students as well. Its no wonder why after every home win the student body and fans stay and sing together "Country Roads" in unison. It goes to show that the spirit and tradition are tucked away nicely in our mountainous section of the country. Also keep an eye on the Mountaineer basketball team, something tells me there are more cars and couches to be burned.
