Ups and Downs of Western
IntroductionWhen looking into colleges, everyone says it is a good idea to visit. On your first visit to Western, it may seem huge, and not for you. However, the campus is actually pretty compact and small, and has many of its buildings within a short walking distance of each other. Western is a good place for students who love to work in groups and get a lot of hands on experience. Students who don't take their education seriously need not apply to Western.
Campus Life and Social LifeWestern is typically known as WASTERN to a good majority of students. That being said, any day of the year that you are looking for a good time, I'm sure there are several to be had at Western. Weekends at Western are one word: amazing! (Unless you are trying to study...). However, with the partying comes a TON of cops; good luck with that one. The registered student organizations at Western are very open to new members, and there are hundreds of them. There are a ton of Fraternities/Soroities at Western if you are interested in them, but if you are not, you hardly ever notice them...other than the occasional talking extremely loud and ditzy on their cell phones, and their 'branded' bags they can't leave home without. What ever your interests are, you can find a club for it; if not, they are more than willing to let you start one.

AcademicsWestern is a good place for students who are majoring in aviation or business, as the programs are nationally recognized. However, because so many students are in the business program, it feels like no one really cares how we are doing. Many of the other departments go out of their way to make sure the students are happy with their education and help them whenever possible. We also have a great engineering program on its own campus about 5 minutes from main campus. This includes several businesses that have set up 'sub-stations' to have the students learn by doing hands-on work. Most of the 'higher level' general education classes (you must take two) are nearly impossible to keep good grades in, because it is required that you have never taken a course in that subject, and they are often quite difficult classes. It seems like Western is more dedicated to finding excellent research professors than teaching profs. Many of them, especially your sophomore year, do not speak a whole lot of English, and if they do, you can't understand them.
Student BodyMany of the students at Western come from around the state of Michigan, with the exception of Aviation students (because the program is good) and the Bronco athletes (because we are not good enough to get big names). Several students would rather party than study, and that shows in thier grades. Each student is different, but Western does a good job letting everyone be involved in things that they want to do.
In Closing...If you choose to attend Western, attend Bronco Bash, which is normally the first day of classes. So many of the student organizations are represented there, and it is a good place to meet many new people with similar interests as you. Plus, you can always round up enough free stuff to last you the year. The Freshmen Welcome Week is a waste of your time; the only good thing to it is you get to move in early. Other than that, they baby you the whole week. Who really wants to be babied in college?? Not me.
