WPI
Rating: 1.3/5 (25 ratings)
IntroductionBe honest on your application, WPI looks for good engineering prospects. I chose it because of its excellent engineering reputation and the way their humanities program works (There is a humanities requirement but it is VERY flexible). Stay away if you don't like lab work, math, or science.
Campus Life and Social LifeSocially the campus is very active. There are many clubs and organizations and it is very easy to start your own. Parties are a lot of fun, the frats on campus often hold themed parties. It's pretty rare I hear about kids getting busted on campus. There are plenty of off campus parties too. Not many people go home, so weekends are pretty active. Parties are easy to find, but if you aren't into that, there are usually LAN parties going or pick up games of frisbee / soccer on the quad. Professors also get involved in the social aspect of campus, the ECE department regularly holds events such as paint balling and BBQs.
AcademicsProfessors and TAs are great, even in the humanities department. The professors are very open and strongly encourage students to attend office hours. TAs are knowledgable about their area and are often graduate / PHD students. The workload is fairly heavy, but it is extremely easy to get extra help on anything you might need it on. One of the strongest departments is the ECE department (I am not too familiar with the other ones).
Student BodyThe student body is very involved and close. It's a pretty small school, but its easy to meet new people and make new friends. Students get a lot of flexability (my freshmen dorm turned our common area into a club w/ strobe lights, etc). Since it is a tech school, students get very creative in their pranks / activities (installing an air horn into a water fountain).
In Closing...WPI is a great school, and after my freshman year I had no doubts that this was where I wanted to be. The school is highly recognized throughout the industry as a leading engineering school. WPI also holds a lot of industry networking events that are good for making connections at and finding internships. The worst thing about this school would probably be the girl scene (if you are a guy), but even that isn't too bad. A lot of people come down to our school for parties from Worcester State, Assumption, Holy Cross, etc.
