Tradition
IntroductionI chose Yale because it was so beautiful. That was one of the first things that drew me to it besides the Yale name. Yale just has a really great feeling about community to it and that’s something that really drew me here.
Campus Life and Social LifeFreshman counselors are Yale’s version of RA’s. But we differ in that we are really what the names says. We’re consuelers,we’re not there to police you. We live with the freshmen. And we help them through everything. We help them move in, so we’re here from the very first day. And then whatever problems they should have over the course of the school year, whether it’s making friends, whether it’s drinking, whether it’s academic, we’re there for them. And if they just want to come down and talk because they’re lonely, that’s what we’re here for.

AcademicsChemical engineering is notoriously probably the worst major Yale in terms of difficulty. It’s very difficult because it requires 27 classes, which is basically a double major. Not to mention that science is usually thought of to be harder than the liberal arts, so it’s just a really, really demanding major, especially in terms of time commitments because you ‘re in the lab a lot. The theater major also is a challenge because it’s very time consuming but in a very different way. At Yale, the major is called theater studies because we do a lot of theater theory in addition to theater practice. So we take classes in literature, stagecraft, direction, and literary theory as well.
Student BodyAt least in my college, which is Jonathon Edwards, we’ve developed a really tight sense of almost family, with the freshman. The residential college system are like little neighborhoods. They’re not dormitories, even though they are where we live. Every residential college has a dining hall, library, workout facilities, and a bunch of other stuff, computer lab, kitchens. Each college kind of has it’s own personality and you get randomly assigned to a residential college your freshman year. And it’s funny how the musical people tend to go to one college and the athletic people tend to go to another. It kinds of gives them a different flavor. And different colleges are known for different things. Like Sillman has a rock climbing wall, Berkeley has an organic cafeteria.
In Closing...You can basically meet anyone in the world through Yale connections, everyone at Yale’s connected and it’s just a matter of finding the right people and convincing them to put in a good word for you, give you an address or a cell phone number. Yale is Yale for a reason, there’s a lot of connections being made here all the time. From the day you step foot on Yale, you’re kind of steeped in tradition from the freshman convocation on to your senior commencement. There are constantly class dinners, where you pray in Latin and things like that.
