Description:
I was reading Richard Wright's "Native Son" the other day (by and by, if you have not read it, do so, because it's outstanding) and I realized that it was February. I was pissed. I wish I had waited until March had begun to start reading it, because Black History Month is incredibly retarded. And this is the problem with Black History Month, it does just the opposite of what it is intended to do. The intention is to raise awareness into the interesting and unique, as well as brilliant, history of the black American...it seems all well and good. But then it makes me ashamed to read Richard Wright because we're nearing the end of winter! And it condenses black American study down to a single month (the shortest month, by the way), as if reading "Invisible Man," or "Their Eyes Were Watching God" was only worthwhile in February, and in the other eleven months you should devote yourself to "real" study. Black History Month is crap, it's a bone thrown to...I don't know who, since everyone seems to be pretty much aware how stupid it is. Also, in here, if you have bothered to read my long rant, you may have noticed that I refrained from the phrase "African American". There is reason for this: first-"African American" is seven god-damned syllables long, where as "black" is one. It is too much to ask that someone nearly cripple their speech by slowing it down so much, especially when both these terms really mean the exact same thing, and there is no malice to either. Second-black people are not African Americans unless they are from Africa and have moved to America: I don't expect to be called an "Irish American" simply because my ancestors were from Ireland. I don't expect it because I have not ever been to Ireland, hold no citizenship in Ireland, and am an American...why should a black guy be called "African American" when he has never been to Africa, is only a citizen of the United States, and is just an American. Call me "white", call him "black", it isn't hateful, it's just the easiest way to go about things, it makes more sense. You know what is going to be great? If and when the aliens come down to Earth, it will instantly end racism. The most bigoted of every race will get together and be as one, for no matter how much they hate the color of each other's skin, they will see more in common with one another despite these menial differences than they do with these damned Martians. Alien invasion will effectively end racism...and, unfortunately, it's probably the only thing that will ever do it.
