Hortensia Amaro, PhD,is Distinguished Professor of Health Sciences at the Bouvé College of Health Sciences and Director of the Institute on Urban Health Research at Northeastern University. For 25 years she has dedicated her career to improving the connections between public health research and public health practice, specifically in the areas of HIV/AIDS, substance abuse and mental health. Her research has resulted in over 90 scientific publications on epidemiological and community-based studies of alcohol and drug use among adolescents and adults; on the effectiveness of HIV/AIDS prevention programs; and on substance abuse and mental health treatment for women. She has been the principal investigator and manager of over 32 research grants totaling over $30 million dollars. True to her belief in translating research to practice, Dr. Amaro was instrumental in the founding of LHI, the Multicultural AIDS Coalition and the Moms' Project and Entre Familia Substance Abuse treatment programs, two national model substance abuse treatment programs targeted to Latina and African American women. Dr.Amaro was awarded an honorary doctoral degree in humane letters by Simmons College in 1994 and has received numerous prestigious awards. Appointed by Mayor Thomas Menino, Dr. Amaro has served on the Board of the Boston Public Health Commission, the governing body of the city Health Department, since its inception.
