Forum Topic: "Chances?"

Post a new topic
Thanks in advance if you read all of this:

I'm a high school junior from Minnesota. My first two years of high school I was at a typical public high school near Minneapolis. For my junior year I have been taking all of my classes (with the exception of band) at the University of Minnesota through a state program for students who want a more challenging curriculum. Anyway, here are my stats:

GPA at high school: 3.90 unweighted (took all honors and one AP sophmore year)

GPA at University of Minnesota: 3.85

ACT: 30 (taking it again in June)

I've been in 7 school plays.

I play trombone and bass and I made all conference in both. I'm section leader and first chair in top concert and jazz bands.

I've run track for 2 years and hope to be captain next year.

I'm a lifeguard at a local waterpark and work about 10 hrs/week.

I volunteer for Al Franken's senate campaign and will continue throughout the summer.

Currently I'm looking at:

Safeties:
UCONN
Clark University

Matches:
Brandeis
Holy Cross
Rhodes

Reaches:
Yale
Brown
Amherst

If anyone can offer any guess at my chances/any advice it would be GREATLY appreciated.

Also I'm planning on majoring in economics if that helps at all.

Are your units considered full college classes or, are they tagged on as part of your high school? The reason that I ask is that you might find yourself a transfer student instead of an entering freshman.

I am taking classes at a university and have to be careful of how many units I acquire so, that I can apply as a freshman.

Oh by the way, my mom is an alumni of U of M Twin Cities. She lived on Summit and Snelling in St. Paul behind Macalester College. She really enjoyed it there. You are at a good school.

I'm taking 12 credits per semester, which is full-time by my high school's standards, but not really by UMN's. My classes are full college classes, and in most of them I am the only high schooler in them. When I apply, I'm going to send a transcript from my high school and one from UMN as well.

I have a few friends who have done the program and have since went to colleges other than UMN and most of them have applied as freshman. I should graduate high school with 48-50 college credits (about a year and a half by most standards), but I'm going to check with the individual colleges about applying when I visit this summer.

Yeah, do. However, with the cost of college these days why not finish up the last two years at U of M? I mean you already ahead of the curve. Why give up all those credits to go back to being a freshman. Finish up and apply to grad school.

You should get into your matches and safeties, but those reaches really will be reaches, especially Yale. The people that apply to those schools are all very good, so most of the time, a big factor is your ACT/SAT score. I would aim for a 33 at least.

Sara N, all three of the poster's reach schools are reaches. None moreso than the others. Just because one has a lower acceptance rate doesn't mean anything. People get accepted to Yale and rejected at Brown. You can't just say "especially" one over the others because that's not how it works.

But I'm with cameron on this one, I would finish college early, take some gap years to travel abroad or whatever you feel like doing and then apply to grad school if you wish.
