Forum Topic: "Guys, I'd really appreciate it if you could give me some odds"

Post a new topic
Honesty is the thing I'm looking for, especially if you kind of know what you're talking about. By the way, I love this website! Anyway, thanks for helping me out.

Some Stats:
GPA (weighted): 4.3 (unweighted) 3.8
Senior Classes: Religion, Physics Honors, Calculus AB, Latin V AB, English V AP, Civics AP (plus 3 years of Ancient Greek Honors)
SAT: 2320 (CR: 800, M: 740, W: 780)
SAT II's: Amer. History: 760, plan on taking Literature and Latin

Extracurriculars: Student Body President (big school), Three Years Varsity Track Team (top javelin thrower), Founded Model UN, Founded Pax Christi (social outreach group), Debated until this year, Newspaper, Acolyte and Caretaker of downtown church

Summer: Page for U.S. Senate; a Summer Semester at Yale (took Latin and Political Phil.); also put on a Latin tutoring summer camp (no one signed up though, shucks)

I'm from New Orleans; I'm a white male (and a twin). I go to a Jesuit school (helps big time with GTown).

Top Schools
1) Yale
2) Harvard
3) Columbia
4) Dartmouth
5) Stanford
6) Brown
7) Penn
8) Georgetown
9) University of Chicago
10)Duke

Sorry if this seems like overkill. I'm actually applying to 18 places, but this is enough.

Anyway, I would REALLY, REALLY appreciate any input whatsoever. If you think I can get in or can't, please say so. Thank you so much for reading.

pretty much looks like you can get into any college you want to! don't let anything stop you from reaching for what you want to do and where you want to go!

get recruited to be an athlete somewhere that's your best bet.
- renix
it looks really good but harvard and yale get tons of applications that look just like or better than this. make sure your taking the hardest classes you can and that your APs' are good
- IvyLeague
IvyLeague, thanks for your reply. I've heard that schools don't really look at AP scores until you've already been accepted; that they just look to see if you've actually taken an AP class. Is there any truth to this?
- jacquez9190
it's pretty funny when someone older is asking someone younger for information about applying to college
- renix
i'm not entirely sure but the AP's are what helps the colleges deciede your class placement in college. For example, Calc BC is an intro college math course but many students finsih it in high school so they would put you in a higher college math class. But on the other side, they want to see how you can handle higher level courses and how well you do on them. Thats the best I can tell you but you could try to look it up.

lol renix, thats funny but I don't know what grade jacquez9190 is in.

"Senior Classes: "

can you read?

I got to tell you; you have some good stats. I would say you have a pretty good bet at Gtown, U. Of Chicago, and Duke; Ivies will be a reach to anybody, but still definitely apply because you have a pretty decent chance.

Just a thought: why don't you apply to some lower level schools so you can get really good merit scholarships? I mean, with the bad economy right now, it is not a bad option to think about, considering the Ivies are $40,000++ a year. UVA might give you a good one possibly, and there's countless to think of it.

Anyway, good luck!

"I would say you have a pretty good bet at Gtown, U. Of Chicago, and Duke; Ivies will be a reach to anybody"

Why did you say that that?! I mean, besides HYP, I think the rest of the ivies are on par with UChicago, Duke, and MAYBE Gtown. So, if you say someone has a decent chance at those 3 schools, they he/she should also have decent chance at the second half ivies.

Renix, actually I know already the answer to my question. I've read several times that schools look for AP classes only, not using the scores for acceptance purposes. Anyway, I was just trying to be polite kind of.
- jacquez9190
Ayax: my apologies; you are correct to some degree. However, Ivies are still the Ivies. I know people who have gotten into Harvard but not Brown, people who have gotten into Princeton and not Dartmouth, and so on so forth. Yes, jacquez9190 has a an excellent transcript, and he has a better chance at the Ivies than most people, but even if you are valedictorian and have received a 2400 on your SAT's, the Ivies are STILL reaches regardless. It is not an insult to anyone; it is just that the Ivies are the hardest schools to get into in the US, and they can do whatever they want admissions-wise.

Jacquez9190; do not get me wrong; you have an AWESOME transcript and it will get you into many well respected schools. It is just for the Ivies (and Stanford) you have to have something THEY want; if you don't have it, you don't get in. I apologize that that sounds harsh, but it is how their admissions staff works. Yet again, good luck!
- Mr. Bassist
i agree with mr. bassist. I have seen people from my school get perfect scores on SATs and have a great transcript but not get accepted. You have a great chance of getting in, but remember their accpetance rates are only 15% or lower. Admissions are pretty messed up and not always fair.

which...is...why...i...said...to...get...recruited
- renix
You definitely can get into any school you want to. It is basically your choice. I only got a 27 on the ACT and I got into some tough colleges and received full scholarships. So I know you can do it. Make your application stand out by doing something different on your application essay or writing part. Be optimistic but weigh all the possibilities. What I don't understand is why Tulane would not be on that list. You are from New Orleans so i know you know how beautiful the campus is. I am planning on going there next year. Good Luck!
- postman_carter
Postman_carter, thank you very much for your reply. I am actually applying to 18 schools, Tulane being one of them. You're right, Tulane is gorgeous. The campus (and the women) are beautiful, the academics are good; it
s just a great place to be. I hope you enjoy it.
- jacquez9190
holy crap! your scores are crazy good. I would be surprised if you weren't accepted at all these colleges
