Okay so my name is liz and UNC at chapel hill has been my number one choice since like FOREVER. However, I'm really worried because it's so hard to get in these days, especially since i live out of state. Throughout high school i have done a lot of extracurriculars like varsity swimming, cheerleading, beta club, national honors society, key club, Student government and i even did a semester abroad at this place called The Island School in Eleuthera, Bahamas. My grades are okay i guess. my GPA is like a 3.3 unweighted, but i have only taken honors and AP courses. My SAT scores are like dead average and i don't know what exactly to do to make my self stand out in my essays and in front of the admissions panel! if anyone has any advice what-so-ever please let me know. I'm applying early action so hopefully my chances of acceptance are better. someone please help me!

Ok, first of all, calm down. You will get in somewhere. However, UNC is extremely difficult to get into oos. Retake the SATs, or take the ACT if the SAT isn't your thing. Your ecs sound great, colleges love athletes and student gov. Your GPA could be better, but since you have taken a very challeging course load, I think you'll be ok, especially if your weighted GPA is 4+. For your essays, just write about whats important to you, the topic doesn't really matter as long as you deminstrate what it means to you. If you focus on that rather than what will impress the addmissions officers, you'll do great. On that note, don't apply EA if it means you don't have enough time to make your app say what you want it to. Early addmissions has no statistical advantage to regular addmissions. Best of luck!

dont worry if you don't get in as a freshman apply as a transfer and it doesnt matter if you're from north carolina or not (they dont take transfer state residency into consideration!)

agreed; your best shot is at a transfer. With your GPA and weak course difficulty, it's going to pretty much take an extraordinary essay to get you in. Sorry, hate to be the debbie downer, but I have scores in their upper-25%, with a 3.97 UW GPA, rank 4/340, and I was deferred EA. It's just a really hard school to get into, especially from OOS (they ony admit 18% OOS). If I were you, I would NOT apply EA, you will be one of the weaker applicants in that pool, and probably have a big chance of getting rejected. EA is only for candidates who think they have a great shot at getting in. Hence, the EA pool is much more self selecting, which is reflected in their higher acceptance rate EA (in that they admit a higher % bc the students are generally stronger). I'd try and get your 1st semester sr. grades up, take a challenging sr. year course load, and take extensive SAT prep. It will take a lot of hard work, but I know it will pay off for you in the end. Best of luck!

it is still possible to get in without a 3.8+. i know some students from my school who got in with around a 3.5-3.7 . however, take the SAT as many times as you can to show them you're a good student & work on that essay ASAP. that's what my plan is. good luck!
