Hey guys- Can anyone give me any tips on applying to Michigan. I have great grades, test scores, and exta-curricular activities, but I'm from out of state (CA), so that basically immediately puts me at a disadvantage. If you know anything about their admissions (esp. if you have been recently admitted), could you comment on it? Thanks!

Where do you go to HS? I live in San Diego also.
- llpitch haha, cool. I go to Valley Center High. I'll be a senior there next year (finally). What about you? Visit my page and leave me a comment. I just put it up a few days ago, so you can be one of the first. :)
- surfcali08 If you do have great grades and test scores then you should be fine. Michigan is a huge school, so it is much more lenient in admissions than other schools of its calibur. Oh, and it is rolling admissions, so I would advise you to apply there as early as possible to better your chances of getting in.
- SammyJ Thanks. I want to apply really early, but need to see what my latest SAT scores are. Do you happen to know what their avg. (esp. from out of state) is?
- surfcali08 I think the average is somewhere around 2050, but it might be a little lower than that
- SammyJ Overall, or for out-of-state? I would assume out of state is a bit higher, since it is more competative. That's cool you live near Stanford. My aunt works there. So what do you think of those Cal Bears? :)
- surfcali08 Hahah believe it or not I'm actually a Michigan fan, since my dad is an alum. But I think that the out of state average might be somewhere in the upper 2000's, and I'm almost positive it doesn't crack 2100.
- SammyJ Thanks for all your help. That's cool that your dad went to UM. I wish I had connections to places where it actually counts for something.
- surfcali08 okay, so i just graduated from high school in san francisco, and am going to be attending michigan in the fall (well actually, this summer). here were my stats: 2080 sat, 660 on both sat 2s. 3.5 unweighted at nationally recognized private high school. student council rep, played two varsity sports, sang in advanced choir for three years, was in a musical. two things that i think are really important though are the essays and leadership. they want to see that you are taking initiative and being active in some community. Examples include being president of a club or captain of a sports team. Hope that helped, and go blue! you can message me if you want to know anything else.
- Wat Da Hook Gon Be?

Yeah! Thanks! I'm really good in the leadership dept. I've been captain of several teams so far, am president of CSF, and helped found 2 other clubs. Congrats on getting in. What a great accomplishment...(and, please, beat Ohio State this year. They're begining to get like SC-they win everything).
- surfcali08 no prob, and yeah they better beat osu this year, because ohio state is in a rebuilding year by their standards, and this might be the best chance mich has in a while. once osu gets a quarterback again, they're gonna be scary. hopefully mich can hold up on defense. good thing i don't even have to switch my colors from cal to michigan. i'll just have to be a die hard fan for both. i've been goin to cal games since i was little, since i live in berkeley. and i see that your bro goes to cal. roll on you bears and go blue.
- Wat Da Hook Gon Be? and since i never really responded (instead choosing to go on a college football rant), that's a solid resume you got. if mich turns out to be the place u wanna go, i'd apply early, but if you can, visit before you apply to find out if it's truly where you wanna be.
- Wat Da Hook Gon Be? I go to Mount Carmel HS in the Rancho Penasquitos/Poway area.
I'm gonna be a Junior next year but in a week I'm actually moving to Pearl Harbor Hawaii. Interesting what schools will be like over there..
- llpitch Good luck in Hawaii. I mean, if you have to move, at least you get to go to some warm, exotic island. BTW, I've been to MCHS a few times. One of our old math teachers, Mrs. Sellers, teaches there now (I think). Do you know her?
- surfcali08 oh...never mind. seriously though, good luck in HI.
- surfcali08 U of M likes to have a diverse group of students so if you are a minority of any type that might help a little. I'm not sure if you living out-of-state is a disadvantage either. I'm not for sure if the same goes with U of M, but many colleges like out-of-state students especially so they can say that they have students from all 50 states. U of M also requires that you take 2 years of the same foreign language in high school. Living in Michigan I know that it is one of the hardest colleges here to get into. However, it isn't impossible. The average high school gpa of freshmen is usually around 3.7. I hope this helps. Good Luck and I hope you make it.

Thanks so much for the input! Unfortunately, I'm not a minority. I think something like my great-great grandmother twice removed was Native American, but I don't think I'm gonna put that down on my app. Also, I'm from Cali, and pretty much every school in the nation already has people from here. My unweighted GPA is a 3.97, so that should help, and I have a ton of ECs, but I've heard they only accept around 25% from outta state. No one from my hs has ever gone there though, so maybe they'll think of that as a good way to widen their alumni base. Anyway, thanks again, and if you find out anything else, let me know please!
- surfcali08 ok i have some questions:
1) i know it believes in "affirmative action." are the requirements any different?
2) does michigan weight GPA themselves if u've taken honors/APs? and do they base your admission on that or your unweighted one?
- happyface2002 1) It no longer practices AA. That was banned last year, and this year it struck it from admissions procedures. Therefore, there is no extra weight given to ethnic/racial minorities.
2) They consider both, but the important one is unweighted. In fact, GPA is given more weight than SAT/ACT. For UM, a good unweighted GPA is around a 3.85+ (UM uses their own grading scale, so you can fish around on their website or collegeconfidential.com for that).
Now, the biggest thing: APPLY EARLY! As in, before November. You have a much, MUCH greater chance of being admitted if you do. And, you'll have a decision by December, but it's non-binding.
Good luck, and go blue!
