Forum Topic: "Rising Senior considering applying to Vandy"

Post a new topic
Hey guys,
I am a rising senior trying to figure out how to approach applying to Vanderbilt. I am currently in a 6-week program here at Vandy, and I really like this place alot. I can definitely see myself coming here, but the only problem is that I don't know if I can even get in. I was wondering what you guys think considering my resume and its flaws. One last thing: I am looking at going into Engineering. So I have a GPA of 90.32 Unweighted/91.57 Weighted, SAT Score of 2070 (770 Math, 590 CR, 710 Writing), No AP courses (only a few are offered, but not in the math or science courses I was interested in) but several advanced courses (total of 9 after senior year),(no calculus before graduating :( ),member of NHS (junior, senior year), founded nationally recognized club (Business Proffesionals of America, junior and senior year),volunteer at homeless shelter (50 hours junior year, more to come senior year), likely very strong recommendations, 730 Math 1, 650 Physics (probaby going to retake after a few months of physics II advanced).

I feel like my low score in CR and my lack of calculus or AP courses will cause me to get rejected pretty easily, but maybe this summer program will give me an upper hand?

What do you guys think? Do I have a chance at ED or Regular?

Thanks!

You definitely have a great shot at getting in even though not having calculus will hurt your application a lot...but it shouldnt matter because you will cover the exact same material in your college calculus class. I advise you to apply for ED as early as possible. Schools usually take a nice bit of apps from ED until they realize that they have admitted more than they need and will start turning down good applications that were turned in later. If you dont get in for ED...Re-apply for regular decision...I am going to Tulane and the admission standards are almost exactly the same. I did not have the greatest test scores, but I put in the work for my application early and thoroughly. Good luck with getting in!

Thanks for the input. I am definitely applying ED1, and i hear that the head of our program (Doc V) can really pull strings to help PAVE participants get in. I am mostly worried about my lack of AP course and Calculus, but i guess we will just have to wait and see.

I don't know. Vanderbilt is kind of weird with applications in my experience. My friend who got a full ride of UChicago got waitlisted and eventually rejected (Vandy was her first choice). I think more ECs might have helped, but I would go for it.
