Hey...I've gotten into both ucsb and pepperdine but I cant decide on where to go. UCSB is better for my major (economics) but I'm scared that I'll party too much and not be able to focus as compared to at Pepper. Plus, both the campuses are beautiful so they kind of cancel each other out...HELP!!
- amundee
I am so glad that you are not focused on the partying aspect of college. That is really smart of you. Leaders in business know how to network but, most of them don't drink that much. Why? Because, when people drink they talk and you want to be the one alert enough to listen.
- cameron cameron you are a huge ****ing nerd. live a little.
- tnxrmx You know life is short. It's not worth wasting my time on things that don't matter- drinking. I don't have time to mess up my mind when I am busy doing important things. And, I have a pretty darn good life- sailing, golf, film production, friends, working with community service. I don't know how partying is going to help any of those activities. But, then we are living in self medicating times aren't we?
You know the thing that makes me the most angry about the party attitude is that it gives adults a reason to not take what we have to say seriously.
And, fine if you need to call me names go right ahead.
- cameron okie...thanks. And another thing, does anyone know how easy it is to transfer out of both uni's...My GPA at the moment is 3.36
- amundee most adults partied in college pretty hard. pre-DUI laws...
- renix Why do you want to know about transferring out? You might want to try liking the school you pick. Are you having doubts about both schools?
- cameron Most students party pretty hard in school post- DUI laws.
And, what do you mean by most?
And, that doesn't negate my drinking is a way of "self medicating" argument.
And, adults forget easily the mistakes they made in the past.
And, because they did it doesn't make it good, right, or smart.
And, look at the news today. SDSU is only a small player in a very big game. Which seems to involve greek clubs.
Another institution colleges could do without.
- cameron I basically want to know where i'd do better academically.
- amundee

Pepperdine. Another thing to consider is how you will be treated at the schools. Lets say you need help in something. Pepperdine is going to cater to your needs. The campus is very supportive of the individuals who attend there. It is easy to find what you need on Campus. If you didn't show up to a class for a number of days they would contact your family because they would notice that you weren't there and they would be concerned That's not going to happen at UCSB.
They care for their students and are eager to help you succeed. They want alumni who had positive experiences and will continue to contribute to the university beyond their college years. Does UCSB actually care about such things? I am not sure how much they offer after the four years. If you are going to work in business then you will need support and networking services way beyond your four years.
They also offer comfortable housing and strong study halls. One of their best areas is education so, tutoring is readily available. And, as I said before, their faculty are professionals, working in their fields of study, not just Ph.D's who spend their life on a campus.
This is really not contest unless, you want to party a lot. I know that Santa Barbara is in a beautiful area and I am sure there are really nice people who attend there. But, since you are focusing on your academics I would stick to a school where academics is the most important thing. Between those two choices Pepperdine is the better. Once again you are saying that ACADEMICS is your goal.
- cameron

Please, don't forget that my father is an alumni there. So, I have first hand experience with this. I am not just giving my opinion. I have been around these people, hung out on campus, and attended events. I also have been to UCSB (first hand) because I am a sailor.
So, once again this is a first hand account. The same as if you asked renix about Brown. His first hand experience trumps anyones opinion of the school or, statistics that are published in some magazine.
- cameron Thanks yo...I think Ive made up my mind...Pepp seems the way to go..thedarksideofucsb.com really scared me!!! And im sure there are parties off campus which you can go to if u get to know the right ppl. Once again, thanks.
- amundee Oh my Lord, don't forget Pepperdine is in Malibu. There is plenty of action from Malibu to Santa Monica which is only 15 min. away, Hollywood, Westside and Downtown. Don't worry you couldn't fill you four years with all that happens in Los Angeles. Have a great time.
Go Waves!
- cameron "And, I have a pretty darn good life- sailing, golf, film production, friends, working with community service. I don't know how partying is going to help any of those activities."
I literally do all those things probably as much as much as you minus the service, plus i play three varsity sports and have good enough grades to get in early at duke. so, no drinking doesnt add to those things, but it doesnt take away from them either. plus i guarantee that i get way more mitt than you, in large part due to drinking culture. so dont knock it till you try it.
- tnxrmx

I was pretty anti-alcohol culture in highschool too. It's kind of natural. Alcohol isn't bad at all you just have to respect it. I'm not into partying as much as I used to be mainly because I started dating a highschool teacher whose students were also at the parties I was attending (small town= not many party options). I still likes me some beer though. I'll go out occasionally but not too much, your body stops being able to handle hangovers as well as you age.
It's definitely not the picture you see from highschool though cameron.
- renix

You know tnxmx I think we have different values. I don't think that you got into Duke because you drink. You can have a fun life without it. Most of the high school kids I hang out with don't drink. They are also the kids I do a lot of the community service projects with.
I really doubt that you have worked as a production assistant and hung out with leading international film makers. However, congrats on getting into Duke early. I am sure you will have a fun time there.
I know that my opinion considering drinking is not a popular notion amongst most people. However, just to let you know, I don't give anyone a hard time when they do it. I respectfully leave.
- cameron

first, i didnt say i was as good at filmmaking as you, i said i spend as much time doing it, which is probably true its a huge part of my life. and i would like to meet up with you in a sailing race as im sure the tables would be turned in that actvity as i am the head race coach for one of the best junior clubs in Canada and still compete actively. but dont you agree that the kids who drink have more active social lives?
- tnxrmx

I'm not bothered by people who drink, as long as they don't do anything stupid like drunk driving, etc. Considering I live in one of the biggest partying spots on the globe (Las Vegas), I see people drinking all the time and have grown to be tolerant of seeing it all around me. Most of the houses my band plays at, there is a bunch of underage drinking going on. I don't drink; for moral reasons and cuz I'm the ride home. As long as you don't do anything seriously dangerous and get so drunk that your barfing your brains out, I don't see the problem. Plus, Canada has a far lower drinking age than the US, so tnxrmx isn't really doing anything wrong, but I can see where cameron's coming from
Amundee: Pepperdine; both are great schools, but Pepperdine is....awesome. Plus the reasons listed by cameron can't describe anything else
Man, I wish I could go sailing. Nevada is landlocked, and Lake Mead is drying out, so I can only sail when I'm in Cal.
- Mr. Bassist

Well I have been sailing since I was nine and am competing in one of the top high school teams in the United States. Have sailed in Nationals twice. Sail out of the sailing center where the United States Olympic sailing trials were. Two of the sailors on my team are going to the Olympics. I am a member of one of the leading sailing yacht clubs in the world. So, yeah, you could beat me but, it would be a close race. What do you sail? CFJ's, 420's, lasers, 505's?
- cameron Sailing is a great sport. Come to California and give it a try.
Yeah, I agree. As long as people aren't being stupid it doesn't really bother me. However, it seems as if a lot of students are being stupid.
No, kids who are naturally social are that way no matter what. We forget you can have good socialization and bad socialization. Being a film maker you must be aware of this fact.
- cameron laser and finn
im hoping for 2012 olympics for finn
what do you sail?
- tnxrmx
